Postcolonial Nostalgias Writing, Representation and Memory

Free Download Dennis Walder, "Postcolonial Nostalgias: Writing, Representation and Memory"
English | 2010 | pages: 215 | ISBN: 0415445337 | PDF | 2,2 mb
This book offers an original and informed critique of a widespread, yet often misunderstood, condition ― nostalgia, a pervasive human emotion connecting people across national, historical, and personal boundaries. Walder analyses the writings of some of those entangled in the aftermath of empire, tracing the hidden connections underlying their yearnings for a common identity and a homeland, and their struggles to recover their histories. Through a series of comparative reflections upon the representation in literary and related cultural forms of memory, he shows how admitting the past into the present through nostalgia enables former colonial or diasporic subjects to gain a deeper understanding of the networks of power within which they are caught in the modern world, and beyond which it may yet be possible to move. Considering authors as varied as V.S Naipaul, J.G. Ballard, Doris Lessing, W.G. Sebald, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as well as versions of "Bushman" song, Walder pursues the often wayward, ambiguous paths of nostalgia as it has been represented beyond, but also within, Europe, so as to identify some of those processes of communal and individual experience that constitute the present and, by implication, the future.

Concepts, Ontologies, and Knowledge Representation

Free Download Concepts, Ontologies, and Knowledge Representation By Grega Jakus, Veljko Milutinović, Sanida Omerović, Sašo Tomažič (auth.)
2013 | 67 Pages | ISBN: 1461478219 | PDF | 3 MB
Recording knowledge in a common framework that would make it possible to seamlessly share global knowledge remains an important challenge for researchers. This brief examines several ideas about the representation of knowledge addressing this challenge. A widespread general agreement is followed that states uniform knowledge representation should be achievable by using ontologies populated with concepts. A separate chapter is dedicated to each of the three introduced topics, following a uniform outline: definition, organization, and use. This brief is intended for those who want to get to know the field of knowledge representation quickly, or would like to be up to date with current developments in the field. It is also useful for those dealing with implementation as examples of numerous operational systems are also given.

Representation of Lie Groups and Special Functions Recent Advances

Free Download Representation of Lie Groups and Special Functions: Recent Advances By N. Ja. Vilenkin, A. U. Klimyk (auth.)
1995 | 504 Pages | ISBN: 9048144868 | PDF | 15 MB
In 1991-1993 our three-volume book "Representation of Lie Groups and Spe cial Functions" was published. When we started to write that book (in 1983), editors of "Kluwer Academic ✅Publishers" expressed their wish for the book to be of encyclopaedic type on the subject. Interrelations between representations of Lie groups and special functions are very wide. This width can be explained by existence of different types of Lie groups and by richness of the theory of their rep resentations. This is why the book, mentioned above, spread to three big volumes. Influence of representations of Lie groups and Lie algebras upon the theory of special functions is lasting. This theory is developing further and methods of the representation theory are of great importance in this development. When the book "Representation of Lie Groups and Special Functions" ,vol. 1-3, was under preparation, new directions of the theory of special functions, connected with group representations, appeared. New important results were discovered in the traditional directions. This impelled us to write a continuation of our three-volume book on relationship between representations and special functions. The result of our further work is the present book. The three-volume book, published before, was devoted mainly to studying classical special functions and orthogonal polynomials by means of matrix elements, Clebsch-Gordan and Racah coefficients of group representations and to generaliza tions of classical special functions that were dictated by matrix elements of repre sentations.

Representation Theory and Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis II Homogeneous Spaces, Representations and Special Functions

Free Download Representation Theory and Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis II: Homogeneous Spaces, Representations and Special Functions By V. F. Molchanov (auth.), A. A. Kirillov (eds.)
1995 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 3642081266 | PDF | 7 MB
This EMS volume contains two contributions: the first one, "Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces", is written by V.F.Molchanov, the second one, "Representations of Lie Groups and Special Functions", by N.Ya.Vilenkin and A.U.Klimyk. Molchanov focuses on harmonic analysis on semi-simple spaces, whereas Vilenkin and Klimyk treat group theoretical methods also with respect to integral transforms. Both contributions are surveys introducing readers to the above topics and preparing them for the study of more specialised literature. This book will be very useful to mathematicians, theoretical physicists and also to chemists dealing with quantum systems.

Abstraction and Representation Essays on the Cultural Evolution of Thinking

Free Download Abstraction and Representation: Essays on the Cultural Evolution of Thinking By Peter Damerow (auth.)
1996 | 418 Pages | ISBN: 9048146445 | PDF | 10 MB
The author of this book is affiliated with the Center for Development and Socialization of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Ed ucation in Berlin and heads its program on culture and cognition which de votes its labors to the reconstruction of scientific concepts through history in a perspective of what might be called "historical epistemology." He is also a member of a related research group in the newly founded Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. Perhaps this double affiliation throws some light on the scope of Damerow’s scientific interests. In any event it will explain why representatives of both these institutions join in an effort to introduce Peter Damerow’s writings to an English speaking audi ence. Damerow’s scholarship ranges across widely different areas including philosophy and history of science, psychology, and education. Among his fields of expertise are the emergence of writing, early Babylonian mathe matics, the history of arithmetic, the relationship between pure and applied mathematics, the theory and methods of mathematics instruction, the tran sition from preclassical to classical mechanics, and the history and theory of relativity.

Representation and Democracy in the EU

Free Download Sandra Kröger, "Representation and Democracy in the EU"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0367739526 | EPUB | pages: 164 | 0.3 mb
This book explores the various ways in which citizens are represented in EU policy-making. Most accounts naturally focus on the European Parliament as the prime source of democratic representation. This collection focuses instead on four other channels that are as and often more important: namely, representation via governments, national parliaments, civil society organisations and directly, via referenda. Based on original research, the book combines democratic theory with detailed empirical analysis to provide an innovative, timely and up-to-date evaluation of the nature of representation in the EU.

Geometry and Representation Theory of Real and p-adic groups

Free Download Geometry and Representation Theory of Real and p-adic groups By Dan Barbasch (auth.), Juan Tirao, David A. Vogan Jr., Joseph A. Wolf (eds.)
1996 | 326 Pages | ISBN: 1461286816 | PDF | 8 MB
The representation theory of Lie groups plays a central role in both clas sical and recent developments in many parts of mathematics and physics. In August, 1995, the Fifth Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications took place at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. Organized by Joseph Wolf, Nolan Wallach, Roberto Miatello, Juan Tirao, and Jorge Vargas, the workshop offered expository courses on current research, and individual lectures on more specialized topics. The present vol ume reflects the dual character of the workshop. Many of the articles will be accessible to graduate students and others entering the field. Here is a rough outline of the mathematical content. (The editors beg the indulgence of the readers for any lapses in this preface in the high standards of historical and mathematical accuracy that were imposed on the authors of the articles. ) Connections between flag varieties and representation theory for real re ductive groups have been studied for almost fifty years, from the work of Gelfand and Naimark on principal series representations to that of Beilinson and Bernstein on localization. The article of Wolf provides a detailed introduc tion to the analytic side of these developments. He describes the construction of standard tempered representations in terms of square-integrable partially harmonic forms (on certain real group orbits on a flag variety), and outlines the ingredients in the Plancherel formula. Finally, he describes recent work on the complex geometry of real group orbits on partial flag varieties.
