2012 | 438 Pages | ISBN: 9400742223 | PDF | 9 MB
Assembling papers originally presented at the Resilient Cities 2011 Congress in Bonn, Germany (June 2011), the second global forum on cities and adaptation to climate change, this volume is the second in a series resulting from this annual event. These cutting-edge papers represent the latest research on the topic and reflect the intensification of the debate on the meaning of and interaction between climate adaptation, risk reduction and broader resilience. Thus, contributors offer more material related to resilience, such as water, energy and food security; green infrastructure; the role of renewables and ecosystem services; vulnerable communities and urban poor; and responsive financing for adaptation and multi-level governance. Overall, the book brings a number of different perspectives to bear on the most pressing issues and controversies surrounding climate change adaptation in cities. These papers will prove invaluable to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of urban resilience and contributing to tackling climate change at the local level.

Resilient and Adaptive Tokyo Towards Sustainable Urbanization in Perspective of Food-energy-water Nexus

Free Download Wanglin Yan, "Resilient and Adaptive Tokyo: Towards Sustainable Urbanization in Perspective of Food-energy-water Nexus"
English | ISBN: 9819938333 | 2024 | 308 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Our cities, and the systems that support them, have not been designed to address the FWE nexus. There exist gaps in awareness of the role and impacts of climate change. Improving communication among stakeholders with the support of scientific evidence is the key to narrowing the gaps. This book approached this issue with a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary moveable nexus approach through the lens of FEW nexus under the project of the Sustainable Urbanization Global Initiative of Belmont Forum. It presents a collection of evidence/science-based planning decisions and participatory practices by using Tokyo as the focal area. It visualizes the stock and flow of the Food-Water-Energy (FEW) supporting the world’s largest metropolitan area, explores how the actors have worked together to secure the resilience and sustainability of resources, and demonstrates the potential of resources in making the city adaptive to climatic and social changes. It is designed for researchers in urbanization, nexus research, urban design research, environment, disaster risk reduction, and climate change studies, and can be used as a textbook for university courses. It is also a useful tool for practitioners and policymakers in applying collective knowledge to policy and decision-making.

Resilient Ministry What Pastors Told Us About Surviving and Thriving

English | 2013 | ISBN: 0830841032 | PDF | pages: 314 | 13.4 mb
What does it take to have fruitful ministry over the long haul? The stresses of pastoring are well known and can be a match for even the best-prepared, most experienced in ministry-multiple tasks, long hours, taxing responsibilities and, yes, some challenging personalities. Too often the results can be burnout, being run out or just feeling worn out.To find out how pastors can thrive as well as survive, the authors undertook a five-year in-depth research project among working pastors. Here in this ground-breaking book is the distilled wisdom of dozens of pastors who have been on the front lines of ministry. We hear from them what works, what doesn’t and what distinctive issues people in ministry face. The authors uncover five key themes that promote healthy, sustainable ministry that lasts-spiritual formation, self-care, emotional and cultural intelligence, marriage and family, leadership and management. These themes are unpacked from the vantage point of ministry on the ground. Questions for personal evaluation and reflection are included throughout the book to bring home the significance of each section. This is the perfect companion for a peer cohort of pastors to read together. It can also be of value to church boards and others who want to better understand how to help sustain their pastors in ministry. In short, this is a book pastors can’t live without.

Resilient Water Management Strategies in Urban Settings Innovations in Decentralized Water Infrastructure Systems

Free Download Tamim Younos, "Resilient Water Management Strategies in Urban Settings: Innovations in Decentralized Water Infrastructure Systems "
English | ISBN: 3030958434 | 2022 | 255 pages | PDF | 8 MB
This book documents innovative approaches for integrating green technologies and decentralized water infrastructure. The two major components of green decentralized water infrastructure are: (1) using locally available alternative water sources (rainwater, greywater, and brackish/saltwater) (at multiple scales, e.g., a single building to a neighborhood community level); and (2) using renewable energy resources (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, other). Chapter 1, introduces the concept and framework of green decentralized water infrastructure. The subsequent nine chapters give a detailed description of global case studies, and discuss significant components of the green decentralized water infrastructure and the challenges. The chapters document global case studies and prospects (chapters 1-7) followed by challenges facing decentralized water infrastructure (chapters 8-10). The book

Soft Assets in Smart and Resilient City Development

Free Download Soft Assets in Smart and Resilient City Development by Eiko Wataya , Rajib Shaw
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 195 Pages | ISBN : 9819733723 | 28.1 MB
Over the past decade, building smarter, resilient cities is an established global trend in urban development, including developing countries. Unexpected external shocks, disasters and damage from climate change have major impacts on sustainable growth and well-being for citizens in today’s cities and requires comprehensive solutions. To deal with these negative events, cities predominantly invest in hard physical infrastructure, with less attention on non-physical soft assets which are intangible in nature and more difficult to quantify, but essential to achieve effective, balanced sustainable development. The value of soft assets can be substantial, and consistent implementation by cities can generate diverse value and be transformative for their urban development. For that purpose, cities need to establish an appropriate strategy, framework and structure to incorporate soft assets during the plan and implementation of hard infrastructure.
