This book presents both updated and new measurements on water resources from selective pilot areas form the Middle East. Demand for water has become very crucial notably in arid and semiarid regions like in the Middle East. The changing climate and the increased population are the most striking challenges on water resources in this region where the largest part of its territory is dry lands and deserts with minimal precipitation and high evaporation rates, and thus, the average per capita of water does not exceed 25 m3/year. This resulted in developing many studies and researches in different Middle East countries to clearly identify and assess the hydrological characteristics of the available water resources and to explore new resources in order to secure balanced water supply/demand.

Quarterly Essay 78 The Coal Curse Resources, Climate and Australia’s Future

English | 2020 | ISBN: 1760642290 | EPUB | pages: 140 | 0.6 mb
Australia is a wealthy nation with the economic profile of a developing country – heavy on raw materials, and low on innovation and skilled manufacturing. Once we rode on the sheep’s back for our overseas trade; today we rely on cartloads of coal and tankers of LNG. So must we double down on fossil fuels, now that COVID-19 has halted the flow of international students and tourists? Or is there a better way forward, which supports renewable energy and local manufacturing? Judith Brett traces the unusual history of Australia’s economy and the ”resource curse” that has shaped our politics. She shows how the mining industry learnt to run fear campaigns, and how the Coalition became dominated by fossil-fuel interests to the exclusion of other voices. In this insightful essay about leadership, vision and history, she looks at the costs of Australia’s coal addiction and asks, where will we be if the world stops buying it? ”Faced with the crisis of a global pandemic, for the first time in more than a decade Australia has had evidence-based, bipartisan policy-making. Politicians have listened to the scientists and put ideology and the protection of vested interests aside and behaved like adults. Can they do the same to commit to fast and effective action to try to save our children’s and grandchildren’s future, to prevent the catastrophic fires and heatwaves the scientists predict, the species extinction and the famines?” Judith Brett, The Coal Curse

Linguistic Resources for Natural Language Processing On the Necessity of Using Linguistic Methods to Develop NLP

Free Download Linguistic Resources for Natural Language Processing: On the Necessity of Using Linguistic Methods to Develop NLP Software by Max Silberztein

Empirical ― data-driven, neural network-based, probabilistic, and statistical ― methods seem to be the modern trend. Recently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Sydney chatbots have been garnering a lot of attention for their detailed answers across many knowledge domains. In consequence, most AI researchers are no longer interested in trying to understand what common intelligence is or how intelligent agents construct scenarios to solve various problems. Instead, they now develop systems that extract solutions from massive databases used as cheat sheets. In the same manner, Natural Language Processing (NLP) software that uses training corpora associated with empirical methods are trendy, as most researchers in NLP today use large training corpora, always to the detriment of the development of formalized dictionaries and grammars.

Leaf Sweeteners Resources, Processing and Health Effects

Free Download Wenbiao Wu, "Leaf Sweeteners: Resources, Processing and Health Effects"
English | ISBN: 1634630726 | 2014 | 193 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book is intended for use as reference literature suitable for scientists, teachers, students, and others who are interested in leaf sweeteners that are currently employed in food and beverage industries. All chapters in this book have been written by scientists from related disciplines with a wide range of backgrounds. It is considered that the widest possible interaction of viewpoints and expertise is necessary for transcending the present state of leaf sweeteners as expeditiously as possible. Some overlaps of information in some chapters provided by different authors are allowed in this book, the purpose of which is to prove the precision of viewpoints or results of each other. It is believed that a human being is normally born to like sweets. Unfortunately, traditional calorie-containing sugars are unhealthy because they may cause obesity, diabetes and dental caries. For this reason, there is a great increase in the demand for new alternative "low calorie" or "non-calorie" sweeteners for dietetic and diabetic needs worldwide. This book has collected information about sweeteners from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, Rubus suavissimus S. Lee and Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd. The sweet components in the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni are proven mainly to be steviol glycosides (including steviosides and rebaudiosides). The sweet components in the leaves of Rubus suavissimus S. Lee are rubusosides. The sweet components in the leaves of Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd are dihydrochalcone glycosides.

Human Rights and Natural Resources An Appraisal

The management of natural resources is directly related to livelihoods for local communities, but is also intimately linked to broader national and regional economic development, as well as to political stability, peace and security. Natural resources and their effective management are necessary for securing the realisation of human rights. While there is some analysis regarding the emergence of specific relevant areas of human rights, such as the right to water, the right to food, or public participation, there is no systematic and comprehensive study on the potential role that human rights law can play in the management of natural resources.
