A Quiet Revolution The First Palestinian Intifada and Nonviolent Resistance

Free Download A Quiet Revolution: The First Palestinian Intifada and Nonviolent Resistance By Mary Elizabeth King
2007 | 488 Pages | ISBN: 1560258020 | PDF | 38 MB
In A Quiet Revolution, renowned civil rights activist Mary Elizabeth King questions the prevailing wisdom that the first Palestinian Intifada was defined by violence. She argues that initially, the uprising was characterized by a massive nonviolent social mobilization, rooted in popular committees often steered by women. These committees adopted strategies that began to lead to political results — among them the beginnings of a negotiated settlement. King traces the tragic movement away from peaceful protest following the killing of four Palestinian laborers in Gaza, and charts the PLOs increasing contempt for nonviolent struggle. She details the complicity of the media in this escalation of violence — TV crews would not cover peaceful protests, but Palestinian boys throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers would attract foreign cameras. King draws upon the history of non-violent movements and argues that only through nonviolent strategies can a negotiated peace be achieved with Israel. King believes that the residual knowledge of the power of nonviolent resistance from the first Intifada will provide the bedrock upon which to build this eventual, lasting peace.

Marginal Revolution in Economics A Reappraisal

This volume is devoted to a reappraisal of the Marginal Revolution on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The year 1871 should be remembered as one of the most important turning points in the history of economics. W. S. Jevons, C. Menger, and L. Walras published epochal works at the very beginning of the 1870s. Although these works were written independently, they shared a common mathematical structure based on classical analysis. For this reason, the emergence of the trio is called the Marginal Revolution. Indeed, 1871 is the starting point of modern economics in the proper sense.

The Russian Revolution

English | 2021 | ISBN: B08TZJC8F4 | 7 hours and 23 minutes / Format: M4B / Bitrate: 128 Kbps | 410 Mb
The Russian Revolution had a decisive impact on the history of the 20th century. In the years following the collapse of the Soviet regime and the opening of its archives, it has become possible to step back and see the full picture.
Starting with an overview of the roots of the revolution, Fitzpatrick takes the story from 1917, through Stalin’s "revolution from above", to the great purges of the 1930s. She tells a gripping story of a Marxist revolution that was intended to transform the world, visited enormous suffering on the Russian people, and, like the French Revolution before it, ended up by devouring its own children.
This updated edition contains a fully revised introduction to address the centenary, and what it all means in retrospect.

"Burnham has real intellectual courage, and writes about real issues." (George Orwell)
Burnham’s claim was not that capitalism was dead, but that it was being replaced not by socialism, but a new economic system he called "managerialism" – rule by managers.
Written in 1941, this is the book that theorized how the world was moving into the hands of the "managers". Burnham explains how capitalism had virtually lost its control, and would be displaced not by labour, nor by socialism, but by the rule of administrators in business and in government.
