In 1994, the Pacific island village of Matupit was partially destroyed by a volcanic eruption. This study focuses on the subsequent reconstruction and contests over the morality of exchanges that are generative of new forms of social stratification. Such new dynamics of stratification are central to contemporary processes of globalization in the Pacific, and more widely. Through detailed ethnography of the transactions that a displaced people entered into in seeking to rebuild their lives, this book analyses how people re-make sociality in an era of post-colonial neoliberalism without taking either the transformative power of globalization or the resilience of indigenous culture as its starting point. It also contributes to the understanding of the problems of post-disaster reconstruction and development projects.

Free Download Jeffrey W. Hargis, "Against the Christians: The Rise of Early Anti-Christian Polemic"
English | 1999 | pages: 186 | ISBN: 0820441562, 0820457418 | PDF | 7,2 mb
Against the Christians examines the anti-Christian polemic works of Celsus, Porphyry, and Julian the Apostate. The first book to analyze the phenomenon of early anti-Christian literature in depth, it chooses the critics’ objection to Christian exclusivism as its starting point. The evolution in the polemic, from a rhetoric of radical distinction to one of rhetorical assimilation, reveals a sophisticated attempt to expose contradictions and inconsistencies within Christianity, while at the same time reflecting the process of fusion between Christianity and the culture of late antiquity.

Two Depression-battered nations confronted destiny in 1932, going to the polls in their own way to anoint new leaders, to rescue their people from starvation and hopelessness. America would elect a Congress and a president – ebullient aristocrat Franklin Roosevelt or tarnished "Wonder Boy" Herbert Hoover. Decadent, divided Weimar Germany faced two rounds of bloody Reichstag elections and two presidential contests – doddering reactionary Paul von Hindenburg against rising radical hate-monger Adolf Hitler.
The outcome seemed foreordained – unstoppable forces advancing upon crumbled, disoriented societies. A merciless Great Depression brought greater – perhaps hopeful, perhaps deadly – transformation: FDR’s New Deal and Hitler’s Third Reich.

Author: Billy Busch
Narrator: Billy Busch

The story of the iconic Anheuser-Busch dynasty, written-for the first time-by a Busch heir. As an heir to the Anheuser-Busch company and fortune, Billy Busch was raised on the real stories of how his family built one of America’s oldest and most iconic brands. Since the company was formed almost 150 years ago, the Busch family, their beer, the famous Clydesdales in their advertising, and even their style of business have become a symbol of the American dream-that not-so-outdated belief that hard work, grit, and a positive can-do attitude make anything possible. Growing up on the family’s ancestral estate as a prince to the King of Beers, Billy lived a life only kids could dream up-living in an amusement park, traveling by private rail car and yacht, and playing with his pet elephant, Tessie.
