Refugees’ Roles in Resolving Displacement and Building Peace Beyond Beneficiaries

Free Download Megan Bradley, "Refugees’ Roles in Resolving Displacement and Building Peace: Beyond Beneficiaries"
English | ISBN: 1626166757 | 2019 | 336 pages | PDF | 2 MB
How are refugee crises solved? This has become an urgent question as global displacement rates continue to climb, and refugee situations now persist for years if not decades. The resolution of displacement and the conflicts that force refugees from their homes is often explained as a top-down process led and controlled by governments and international organizations. This book takes a different approach. Through contributions from scholars working in politics, anthropology, law, sociology and philosophy, and a wide range of case studies, it explores the diverse ways in which refugees themselves interpret, create and pursue solutions to their plight. It investigates the empirical and normative significance of refugees’ engagement as agents in these processes, and their implications for research, policy and practice. This book speaks both to academic debates and to the broader community of peacebuilding, humanitarian and human rights scholars concerned with the nature and dynamics of agency in contentious political contexts, and identifies insights that can inform policy and practice.

Generic and Specific Roles of Saccharides at Cell and Bacteria Surfaces

Free Download Emanuel Schneck, "Generic and Specific Roles of Saccharides at Cell and Bacteria Surfaces: Revealed by Specular and Off-Specular X-Ray and Neutron Scattering"
English | 2010 | pages: 143 | ISBN: 3642154492, 3642266258 | PDF | 4,5 mb
Systematic investigations of the structure, mechanics, and dynamics of biological surfaces help us understand more about biological processes taking place at cell and bacteria surfaces. Presented here is a study of the role membrane-bound saccharides play in the modulation of interactions between cells/bacteria and their environments. In this thesis, membrane structures were probed perpendicular and parallel to the surface, and sophisticated planar models of biomembranes composed of glycolipids of various structural complexities were designed. Furthermore, specular and off-specular X-ray and neutron scattering experiments were carried out. This research has led to the development of several new methods for extracting information on the structure and mechanics of saccharide-rendered biomembranes from the measured scattering signals. In fact, more is now known about the influence of the saccharide structure. These results demonstrate that the study of planar model systems with X-ray and neutron scattering techniques can provide comprehensive insight into the structure and mechanics of complex biological surfaces.

Psychological Communication Theories, Roles and Skills for Counsellors

Free Download Henk T. van der Molen, "Psychological Communication: Theories, Roles and Skills for Counsellors"
English | ISBN: 9462360529 | 2014 | 206 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book combines relevant theoretical insights and concrete communication skills necessary for effective psychological counseling and coaching. The book first explores the counselor’s basic attitude, and then it examines the views of various client-centered, cognitive behavioral and social learning theories that are important for good counseling. Bridging theory and practice, the book describes the counselor in four roles, as confidant, communicative detective, teacher, and coach. The counselor uses these roles within a three-stage helping model: problem clarification, gaining new insights, and treatment of the problem. As a guide to counseling practice, the book looks at the essential communications skills for each of these three stages. Many practical examples that clarify the counselor-client interaction are discussed throughout the book. Online material The online material (www.psychologicalcommunication.com) accompanying the book offers numerous exercises that are helpful to enhance the student’s insight in the theories and to acquire the communication skills.

Figures of the Migrant The Roles of Literature and the Arts in Representing Migration

Free Download Siobhan Brownlie, "Figures of the Migrant: The Roles of Literature and the Arts in Representing Migration "
English | ISBN: 103206790X | 2023 | 218 pages | PDF | 10 MB
This volume seeks to investigate the representation of the migrant and migration in literary texts and the arts. Through studies that examine works in a range of art forms ‒ novels, theatre, poetry, creative non-fiction, documentary films and performance and video installations ‒ that evoke a variety of historical and (trans)national contexts, the volume focuses on the question of the roles of literature and the arts in representing migration. An important issue considered is the extent to which artistic figuration can act as a counterpoint to social discourse on migrants that often involves stereotypes and reductive views. The different contributions to the volume illustrate that literature and the arts can provide readers and viewers with a space for fluid knowledge production and affective expansion and that within that overarching function, artistic works play three main roles with regard to representing migration: undertaking a socio-political and cultural critique, presenting alternative views to stereotypes that highlight the singularity and complexity of the migrant and providing proposals for different futures.
