In Schooling in the Antebellum South, Sarah L. Hyde analyzes educational development in the Gulf South before the Civil War, not only revealing a thriving private and public education system, but also offering insight into the worldview and aspirations of the people inhabiting the region. While historians have tended to emphasize that much of the antebellum South had no public school system and offered education only to elites in private institutions, Hyde’s work suggests a different pattern of development in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, where citizens actually worked to extend schooling across the region. As a result, students learned in a variety of settings―in their own homes with a family member or hired tutor, at private or parochial schools, and in public free schools. Regardless of the venue, Hyde shows that the ubiquity of learning in the region proves how highly southerners valued education.

Free Download Schooling for Sustainable Development in Canada and the United States By Rosalyn McKeown, Victor Nolet (auth.), Rosalyn McKeown, Victor Nolet (eds.)
2013 | 344 Pages | ISBN: 940074272X | PDF | 2 MB
Education for sustainable development (ESD) presents an intriguing challenge in developed countries. The very notion of sustainable development may appear to be at cross-purposes with the social and political aims of large industrial economies. Yet, arguably, the residents of wealthy countries may be most in need of new ways of thinking and behaving on an increasingly more fragile and crowded planet. This book presents a collection of essays that capture the depth and diversity of education for sustainable development (ESD) work in formal education in Canada and the United States. Many of the authors are pioneers in the field of ESD, not only in their own countries but internationally. In this book, they share their expertise, lessons learned, and insights into the ongoing success of their work. The essays reflect leading edge practice, innovation, and depth of experience and provide clear models and strategies for expanding the application and influence of ESD in wealthy countries. The ESD programs described in the book are relevant and culturally appropriate for the specific locally contexts in which they are found but also in the larger context of ESD writ large as a planetary endeavour.

Novel Schooling Education, Formation, and Reading in Fiction

Free Download Bridget T. Chalk, "Novel Schooling: Education, Formation, and Reading in Fiction"
English | ISBN: 303166857X | 2024 | 240 pages | EPUB, PDF | 315 KB + 3 MB
This bookidentifies and explores the consistent link between negative depictions of education in novels and claims for the educative effects of reading them. The novel and education are both phenomena that rely fundamentally on development over time: the former in Description and character, and the latter in individual potential. Despite this basic parallel, these forms of development are at odds in many works of fiction that treat education as constrictive and even traumatic to the individual, rather than healthy and formative. Novel Schooling identifies a pervasive pattern in novels from the 19th to 21st centuries: writers ranging from Charles Dickens and D.H. Lawrence to Zadie Smith reject conventional modes of education and propose their own models for shaping the sensibilities of their characters and readers. These works critique institutional education as a point of departure to position reading fiction as a superior form of individual development. Using the new ethics and reader-response theory, this work traces the treatment of education in and through the novel, concluding with fresh assertions of the value of literature in a digital, market-driven world.

2008 | 515 Pages | ISBN: 1848551843 | PDF | 4 MB
Three themes underpin the tripartite structure of Power, Voice, and the Public Good: the definitional and theoretical underpinnings of globalization; the ubiquitous nature and topical display of globalization; and the possibilities of understanding, redefining and rethinking aspects of globalization with the backdrop of issues that relate to education, and the pursuit of public good. A plethora of examples show how education and schooling respond to and are driven by larger global networks, demands, and discourses are explored. Each chapter of the book consistently addresses ways of looking at the hope and promise of education and schooling in spite of the advent, realities, and complexities of their globalized societies.

Global Pedagogies Schooling for the Future

Free Download Global Pedagogies: Schooling for the Future By H. Svi Shapiro (auth.), Joseph Zajda (eds.)
2010 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 9048136164 | PDF | 2 MB
In a postmodern world characterized by flux and uncertainty, parents often view education institutions as a major, if not the only, provider of moral certainties for their children. Yet ironically, as these expectations of schools and their staff have increased, conservative-minded governments have attenuated the ability of schools to achieve them, through funding cuts, centralization and the blunt instrument of league tables. This volume, the twelfth in the Springer series Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research, analyses the role schools might play in the communities of the future. The contributors argue that, globally, education and pedagogy in particular, as that sphere of human activity most concerned with the deliberate way in which consciousness and conscience is formed, and identity inculcated, has the capacity to contribute significantly to a world in which social justice, tolerance and care for the environment become the dominant social paradigm. As with the others in this series, the aim of this volume is to provide an accessible and practical, yet scholarly source of information about international concerns in the field of globalisation, global pedagogies, and educational transformation. Readers will find here the very latest thinking on these issues, discussed in the context of global culture. The chapters provide directions in education, and policy research, which will be relevant to transformational educational reforms in the 21st century. The book’s two sections focus first on main trends and issues around the world, before moving on to explore the interplay between education and the concepts of equality, access and democracy. Researchers and educationalists will find much to ponder, from an examination of the politics of new history textbooks in Russia, to the difference in attitudes to tertiary education displayed by young people from urban and rural backgrounds.

Identity and Schooling among the Naxi Becoming Chinese with Naxi Identity

Free Download Haibo Yu, "Identity and Schooling among the Naxi: Becoming Chinese with Naxi Identity "
English | ISBN: 0739132903 | 2009 | 252 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Identity and Schooling among the Naxi examines the identity construction of Naxi students in Lijiang No.1 Senior Secondary School in China, focusing on the changing roles of school, community, and family in the identity construction of the students. Through participant observation, interviews, and student essays, Yu finds that Naxi students of the school retain a strong Naxi identity while also managing to fit into mainstream culture through a process she characterizes as "harmonious creative identity engagement". Three main forces affecting the identity construction of the Naxi students are highlighted: the state and the school, Naxi intellectuals, and socialization in the family and community. As an institution of the state, the school conveys national ideology and instills a sense of ethnic unity and an understanding of the culture of the Chinese nation. However, the school also takes an active role in ethnic identity construction of the Naxi students. At the same time, Naxi intellectuals, through their research publications and responses to state policies, preserve and revitalize Naxi culture. Socialization within the community and family allows the Naxi students to learn about their heritage. These factors result in both an asserted and assigned identity of the Naxi.
