Science and Technology in Homeric Epics

Free Download S. A. Paipetis, "Science and Technology in Homeric Epics"
English | 2008 | pages: 525 | ISBN: 1402087837, 9401785317 | PDF | 135,2 mb
In the Homeric Epics, important references to specific autonomous systems and mechanisms of very advanced technology, such as automata and artificial intelligence, as well as to almost modern methods of design and production are included. Even if those features of Homeric science were just poetic concepts (which on many occasions does not explain the astonishing details of design and manufacture, like the ones included in the present volume), they seem to prove that these achievements were well within human capability. In addition, the substantial development of machine theory during the early post-Homeric age shows that the Homeric descriptions were a kind of prophetic conception of these machines, and scientific research must be a quest for the fundamental principles of knowledge available during the Late Bronze Age and the dawn of the Iron Age.

Science Education Towards Social and Ecological Justice Provocations and Conversations

Free Download Science Education Towards Social and Ecological Justice: Provocations and Conversations by Matthew Weinstein , Chantal Pouliot , Isabel Martins , Ralph Levinson , Lyn Carter , Larry Bencze , Ajay Sharma
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 214 Pages | ISBN : 3031393295 | 12.2 MB
This book consists of stories of struggles in science education presented by a network of science educators working in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Britain, and the United States. The common goal of these educators is to produce more socially/ecologically just models and practices of science education. The book considers and reworks the key-terms of current social justice: agency, realism, justice, and power. Its first section explores re-inhabiting science in the quest for more just worlds including reterritorializing science within emergent theories of critical realism, engaging citizens activists with corporate science, and challenging neoliberalism and the forces that organize (structure) knowledge. The second section redefines praxis of science education itself through nuanced explorations of agency, decolonialism, and justice in ways that emphasize complexity, hybridity, ambivalence, and contradiction. The stories of this international group capture individual and collective efforts, motivated by a persistent sense that science and science education matter for questions of justice.

Multiple Analogies in Science and Philosophy

Free Download Cameron Shelley, "Multiple Analogies in Science and Philosophy"
English | 2003 | pages: 184 | ISBN: 1588114023, 9027223637 | PDF | 2,9 mb
A multiple analogy is a structured comparison in which several sources are likened to a target. In Multiple analogies in science and philosophy, Shelley provides a thorough account of the cognitive representations and processes that participate in multiple analogy formation. Through analysis of real examples taken from the fields of evolutionary biology, archaeology, and Plato’s Republic, Shelley argues that multiple analogies are not simply concatenated single analogies but are instead the general form of analogical inference, of which single analogies are a special case. The result is a truly general cognitive model of analogical inference.Shelley also shows how a cognitive account of multiple analogies addresses important philosophical issues such as the confidence that one may have in an analogical explanation, and the role of analogy in science and philosophy.

Mind Hive A Science Fiction Thriller

Free Download Jake Berry Ellison Jr., "Mind Hive: A Science Fiction Thriller"
English | 2019 | pages: 414 | ISBN: 1548178608 | EPUB | 0,6 mb
In Mind Hive, the glimmering technopolis of Seattle becomes the epicenter of an underground Cyber Justice tribe’s emergence with a Singularity designed to save intelligence from extinction. When Seattle journalists discover the cult-like CyberClan, they expose a global conspiracy and catalyze a simulated future for humankind. Jake Berry Ellison Jr. earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana, and since then has written several novels and short stories. He has had short works of unusual fiction published and his self-published novel "Sons of Wayne" was a semi-finalist in the Faulkner-Wisdom Creative Writing Competition in 2009; and in 2008, "Sons of Wayne" was Semi-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. – What others say about Jake Berry Ellison Jr.’s writing and journalism: -"Some say data or raw information is the ‘new oil’ and that artificial intelligence could someday surpass or even threaten humanity. That sounds important, but also complex and boring. Jake Ellison in ‘Mind Harvest’ explores the potential (hopefully fantastical) dark side of AI in a good fun romp of a read.He is one of those rare writers who can swim as easily in fiction as non-fiction. How does he do this? Because he knows ‘truth’ can be found anywhere. And Ellison is deeply, passionately, compulsively focused on seeking truth. I’m not one to argue it exists, but it’s worth looking for, right? Ellison is great fun to read because he simultaneously has his finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist and is at the same time often repulsed by it." Tom Paulson, Seattle-based journalist who specializes in reporting on science, medicine, global health and poverty matters. – "Jake Ellison is one of the best reporters I worked with during my 15 years at SeattlePI (formerly Seattle Post-Intelligencer). He is passionate and ethical, great at developing sources, dedicated to the mission of journalism and a gifted writer." Sarah Rupp, Former Executive Producer/Managing Editor at SeattlePI. – "I worked with Jake Ellison for nearly a decade at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and was always impressed by his drive, dedication and intelligence. What was unique about Jake was the diversity of his skills. In his time at the P-I Jake worked as the A1 designer, an online, breaking news producer and a deeply-sourced beat reporter covering things like higher education and social issues. Jake could quite literally do it all: report the story, lay it out in the newspaper and transfer the text and images to the online product." Chris Grygiel, AP Northwest News Editor. – "Jake is a talented journalist with big-time, literary-quality writing talent, outstanding Web skills and great deadline skills and seasoning. He can run a news site intelligently, with excellent judgment, singlehandedly when necessary but he’s also a real team player." David McCumber, former Managing Editor, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, author of "An Air That Kills: How the Asbestos Poisoning of Libby, Montana, Uncovered a National Scandal" and other books. – "Jake is one of the most progressive thinkers and best journalists I have ever known! He’s inspiring!" Jennifer Strachan, Chief Content Officer at KUOW, a Seattle public radio station. – "Jake dares. He always seeks-and finds-new, better ways to advance initiatives. More than that, he is ruthless in assessing the success of his ideas. He drove traffic for SeattlePI. Readers adored his work, because they couldn’t find it anywhere else." Levi Pulkkinen, senior editor SeattlePI.com, widely published courts reporter and essayist.
