The Sex Lives of Saints An Erotics of Ancient Hagiography

Free Download Virginia Burrus, "The Sex Lives of Saints: An Erotics of Ancient Hagiography "
English | ISBN: 081222020X | 2007 | 224 pages | AZW3 | 673 KB
Has a repressive morality been the primary contribution of Christianity to the history of sexuality? The ascetic concerns that pervade ancient Christian texts would seem to support such a common assumption. Focusing on hagiographical literature, Virginia Burrus pursues a fresh path of interpretation, arguing that the early accounts of the lives of saints are not antierotic but rather convey a sublimely transgressive "countereroticism" that resists the marital, procreative ethic of sexuality found in other strands of Christian tradition.

Sex, Symbolists and the Greek Body

Free Download Richard Warren, "Sex, Symbolists and the Greek Body "
English | ISBN: 135004234X | 2019 | 280 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
This book explores Symbolist artists’ fascination with ancient Greek art and myth, and how the erotic played a major role in this. For a brief period at the end of the 19th century the Symbolist movement inspired artists to turn inwards to the unconscious mind, endeavouring to unveil the secrets of human nature through their symbolic art. But above all their greatest interest, and fear, was man (and woman’s) sexuality. Building upon the traditions of Academic neoclassicism, but fired with a new zeal, they turned back to Greek art and myth for inspiration.

Sex as Work Decriminalisation and The Management of Brothels in New Zealand

Free Download Claire Weinhold, "Sex as Work: Decriminalisation and The Management of Brothels in New Zealand "
English | ISBN: 3031192591 | 2023 | 275 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book examines the ways that brothels are managed under decriminalisation in New Zealand. New Zealand decriminalised sex work in 2003 with the passage of the Prostitution Reform Act, making it the first country to do so. Decriminalisation situates brothels as ‘businesses like any other’ and creates a legislative platform for better working conditions for sex workers. Nevertheless, we have limited understanding of how brothels are managed in New Zealand. Drawing on interviews with brothel operators and sex workers, this book explores how the law is understood and implemented, how brothel operators position their businesses, and how they seek legitimacy in a historically stigmatised sector. It also examines the rules and norms by which operators manage their businesses and the possibilities for sex workers to consent to commercial sexual services in the context of neoliberal norms of work and of managers who expect them to be professionalised, responsibilised and productive.
