Skills are frequently in the news and in the public eye in every country. Stories highlight concerns about education and literacy standards, grades, learning by rote, and university students being unprepared for work, as well as debates surrounding internships and apprenticeships, and social exclusion through skills policy. The recent financial crisis has forced education and training to take a back seat, and has caused an increase in youth unemployment. Skill and skilled work are widely considered important for promoting both prosperity and social justice. But how do we define skill?

Recent U.S. immigration reform proposals have focused almost exclusively on regulating the population of low-skilled foreign workers. High-Skilled Immigration in a Global Labor Market contends that policymakers should focus more on attracting immigrants with exclusive skill sets-professional, technical, and managerial (PTM) workers. PTM workers positively impact the economy by expanding production capability, increasing the growth rate of total factor productivity, and enhancing international competitiveness. Barry R. Chiswick and his coauthors examine the policies established by other OECD countries (such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand) to attract foreign PTM workers and explore how U.S. immigration policy could be altered to maximize the economic benefits of high-skilled immigration.

Skilled Heartfelt Midwifery Practice Safe, Relational Care for Alternative Physiological Births

Free Download Skilled Heartfelt Midwifery Practice: Safe, Relational Care for Alternative Physiological Births by Claire Feeley
English | PDF (True) | 2023 | 131 Pages | ISBN : 3031436423 | 2.1 MB
This book about the art, craft and science of expert midwifery care, while focusing on ‘alternative physiological births’ that are those ‘outside’ of guidelines, the contents can be applied to any birthing choices. Drawing upon the findings of a PhD that captured the experiences of midwives who proactively supported alternative physiological births while working in the National Health Service, their practice was conceptualised as ‘skilled heartfelt practice’. Skilled heartfelt practice denotes the interrelationship between midwives’ attitudes and beliefs in support of women’s choices, their values of cultivating meaningful relationships, and their expert practical clinical skills. It is these qualities combined that give rise to what is called ‘full-scope midwifery’ as defined by the Lancet Midwifery Series. This book illuminates why and how these midwives facilitated safe, relational care. Using a combination of emotional intelligence skills and clinical expertise while centring women’s bodily autonomy, they ensured safe care was provided within a holistic framework. Moreover, this book offers insights for midwives to move beyond ‘rule-based’ practice, where the benefits of expert practice are illuminated.

Mobile Communication and Low-Skilled Migrants’ Acculturation to Cosmopolitan Singapore examines the role of mobile communication in the acculturation of South Asian labor migrants to Singapore, adopting a mobile phone appropriation model and following a pluralistic-typological approach. While presenting data from a questionnaire survey and interviews with low-skilled migrants from Bangladesh and India in Singapore, it explores how their specific social conditions, including their transient status and low entitlements in their host country, influenced their mobile phone appropriation. It considers the links these migrants established and retained with their countries of origin and residence to identify several types of appropriation and acculturation types among the various populations.
