2004 | 416 Pages | ISBN: 0700714200 | PDF | 2 MB
In seeking to provoke debate, the book reveals the variety of experiences evident in countries and regions marked by capitalist and (post) socialist regulatory frameworks, and contrasting labour regimes, histories and cultures. The contributions show the importance of critically examining both the complex nature of global-local links and the particular ways economic processes are around the themes of labour regimes, labour processes, labour mobility and labour communities, the essays show how economic development is not only shaped by market forces but is also interlocked in systems of meaning.

Identity and Ethnic Relations in Southeast Asia Racializing Chineseness

Free Download Identity and Ethnic Relations in Southeast Asia: Racializing Chineseness By Chee Kiong Tong (auth.)
2011 | 274 Pages | ISBN: 904818908X | PDF | 3 MB
Modern nation states do not constitute closed entities. This is true especially in Southeast Asia, where Chinese migrants have continued to make their new homes over a long period of time, resulting in many different ethnic groups co-existing in new nation states. Focusing on the consequences of migration, and cultural contact between the various ethnic groups, this book describes and analyses the nature of ethnic identity and state of ethnic relations, both historically and in the present day, in multi-ethnic, pluralistic nation states in Southeast Asia. Drawing on extensive primary fieldwork in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, the book examines the mediations, and transformation of ethnic identity and the social incorporation, tensions and conflicts and the construction of new social worlds resulting from cultural contact among different ethnic groups.

Women, Subalterns, and Ecologies in South and Southeast Asian Women’s Fiction

Free Download Chitra Sankaran, "Women, Subalterns, and Ecologies in South and Southeast Asian Women’s Fiction"
English | ISBN: 0820360872 | 2022 | 240 pages | PDF | 10 MB
In recent decades, East Asia has gained prominence and has become synonymous with Asia, while other Asian regions, such as South and Southeast Asia, have been subsumed under it. The resultant overgeneralization has meant that significant aspects of the global ecological crisis as they affect these two regions have been overlooked. Chitra Sankaran refocuses the global lens on these two rapidly developing regions of Asia. Combining South Asian and Southeast Asian philosophical views and folk perspectives with mainstream ecocritical and ecofeminist theories, she generates a localized critical idiom that qualifies and subverts some established theoretical assumptions.

The Courteous Power Japan and Southeast Asia in the Indo-Pacific Era (Volume 92)

Free Download John D. Ciorciari, "The Courteous Power: Japan and Southeast Asia in the Indo-Pacific Era (Volume 92) "
English | ISBN: 0472074970 | 2021 | 332 pages | PDF | 6 MB
The Courteous Power seeks to provide a nuanced view of the current relationship between Japan and Southeast Asia. Much of the current scholarship on East-Southeast Asian engagement has focused on the multidimensional chess game playing out between China and Japan, as the dominant post-imperialist powers. Alternatively, there has been renewed attention on ASEAN and other Southeast Asian-centered initiatives, explicitly minimizing the influence of East Asia in the region. Given the urgency of understanding the careful balance in the Indo-Pacific region, this volume brings together scholars to examine the history and current engagement from a variety of perspectives, ranging from economic and political, to the cultural and technological, while also focusing more clearly on the specific relationship between the region and Japan.

Chicken and Rice Fresh and Easy Southeast Asian Recipes From a London Kitchen

Free Download Shu Han Lee, "Chicken and Rice: Fresh and Easy Southeast Asian Recipes From a London Kitchen"
English | 2016 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 0241199077 | EPUB | 99,7 mb
Shu Han Lee moved to London from Singapore as a student. Homesick and hungry, she started teaching herself to cook the food she’d grown up with-Singaporean and Malaysian dishes, with a strong Chinese influence from her Hokkien Chinese mother. These recipes, from her mother’s Sesame Oil Chicken to Ox Cheek and Venison Rendang, are ones you will want to make time and time again. There are perfect midweek suppers rustled up in less time than it takes to order a takeaway, and healthier and better tasting at that: Fennel and Minced Pork Stir Fry, Fried Hor Fun Noodles with Kale and Beansprouts, or Tom Yum Soup with Mussels. For weekends, there are more adventurous projects: learn how to make your own steamed buns, egg noodles, or BBQ Sambal Lemon Sole-a whole fish barbequed on banana leaves. Although these are Southeast Asian recipes, Shu’s seasonal approach to the very best produce is reflected throughout this book: from Brussels Sprouts with Smashed Garlic and Oyster Sauce to No-churn Rhubarb and Condensed Milk Ice Cream. There are also recipes that Shu has picked up on her travels throughout Southeast Asia, such as Vietnamese Caramel Pork Ribs, Thai Baked Glass Noodles with Prawns, and Black Pepper and Burmese Chickpea Tofu with Fish Sauce, Lime, and Honey Dressing.
