English | ISBN: 1409406628 | 2010 | 322 pages | EPUB | 1047 KB
The studies in this volume illuminate the thought and life of Philip Melanchthon, one of the most neglected major figures in Reformation history and theology. Melanchthon was one of the most widely published and respected thinkers in his own day, who authored some of the sixteenth-century’s most important books on Latin and Greek grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, and history, to say nothing of his theological output, which included the first overview of Protestant theology, the first Protestant commentaries on Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, and John. He was also the chief drafter of the Augsburg Confession and wrote its defense, the Apology. These essays, written over the past twenty years, commemorate the 450th anniversary of Melanchthon’s death in 2010. The articles provide a wide-ranging picture of Melanchthon’s thought and life with topics including his view of free will, approaches to biblical interpretation, his perspective on the church fathers and world history, and comparisons to other important figures of the age, including Calvin, Luther and Erasmus.

Speaker and Authority in Old Norse Wisdom Poetry

Free Download Brittany Erin Schorn, "Speaker and Authority in Old Norse Wisdom Poetry "
English | ISBN: 3110548178 | 2017 | 208 pages | AZW3 | 1450 KB
While there is a long tradition of research into eddic poetry, including the poems classed as wisdom literature, much of this has approached the subject either as a primarily philological commentary or has addressed literary and thematic topics of individual or small groups of poems. This book offers a wide-ranging enquiry into the defining features of Old Norse wisdom, including the representation of wisdom in texts which cross traditional generic boundaries. It builds on recent advances in understanding of pre-Christian religion in Scandinavia, and calls on comparative and supporting work from several different disciplinary backgrounds (including literary theory, other medieval literatures and anthropology). Speaker and Authority interrogates important questions about the concept of knowledge, as well as its role in medieval Scandinavian society and its broader European cultural context.

Not Like a Native Speaker On Languaging as a Postcolonial Experience

Free Download Rey Chow, "Not Like a Native Speaker: On Languaging as a Postcolonial Experience"
English | 2014 | pages: 187 | ISBN: 0231151454, 0231151446 | PDF | 1,8 mb
Although the era of European colonialism has long passed, misgivings about the inequality of the encounters between European and non-European languages persist in many parts of the postcolonial world. This unfinished state of affairs, this lingering historical experience of being caught among unequal languages, is the subject of Rey Chow’s book. A diverse group of personae, never before assembled in a similar manner, make their appearances in the various chapters: the young mulatto happening upon a photograph about skin color in a popular magazine; the man from Martinique hearing himself named "Negro" in public in France; call center agents in India trained to Americanize their accents while speaking with customers; the Algerian Jewish philosopher reflecting on his relation to the French language; African intellectuals debating the pros and cons of using English for purposes of creative writing; the translator acting by turns as a traitor and as a mourner in the course of cross-cultural exchange; Cantonese-speaking writers of Chinese contemplating the politics of food consumption; radio drama workers straddling the forms of traditional storytelling and mediatized sound broadcast.

1995 | 330 Pages | ISBN: 0521479126 | PDF | 25 MB
Code-switching–the alternating use of several languages by bilingual speakers–does not usually indicate lack of competence on the part of the speaker, but results from complex language skills. The reasons why people switch their codes are as varied as the directions from which linguists approach this issue. This volume of essays by leading scholars explores code-switching in particular social and institutional contexts, and brings together current research into the social, grammatical and psycholinguistic issues raised by this highly significant form of speech behavior.
