Free Download Daniel Tink, "Norwich and Norfolk: Stone Age to the Great War (Visitors’ Historic Britain)"
English | 2020 | pages: 192 | ISBN: 1526708426 | EPUB | 95,5 mb
This unique study traces the history of Norwich and Norfolk from the time of earliest life to the outbreak of the First World War. It is designed to appeal to the travelers, both single and in family groups, who wish to explore the host of fascinating places on offer in what the Norfolk-born authors believe to be the most unspoiled and mysterious county in England. Norwich has its own section along with three possible walks taking in many of the recommended sites. The vast coast is presented next and finally the book travels to central Norfolk: at all times, places of interest are grouped as much as possible so that travelers can make the most of the time available. Everywhere, legends and stories relating to an area are woven into the narrative. A final chapter considers Norwich and Norfolk through time using rare archive and archaeological material to give a taste of life in days gone by. Top Norfolk photographer Daniel Tink has taken 100 photographs especially for the book and presents these where appropriate alongside some wonderful contrasting old prints and etchings. The book concludes with a comprehensive index and bibliography designed to facilitate further study. Throughout, telephone numbers and websites of attractions are given, providing readers with a ‘toolkit’ to unlock the secrets, history, sites and stories of this vast county.

Finding Time for the Old Stone Age A History of Palaeolithic Archaeology and Quaternary Geology in Britain, 1860-1960

Free Download Anne O’Connor, "Finding Time for the Old Stone Age: A History of Palaeolithic Archaeology and Quaternary Geology in Britain, 1860-1960"
English | 2007 | pages: 464 | ISBN: 0199215472 | PDF | 6,7 mb
Finding Time for the Old Stone Age explores a century of colorful debate over the age of our earliest ancestors. In the mid nineteenth century curious stone implements were found alongside the bones of extinct animals. Humans were evidently more ancient than had been supposed-but just how old were they? There were several clocks for Stone-Age (or Palaeolithic) time, and it would prove difficult to synchronize them. Conflicting timescales were drawn from the fields of geology, palaeontology, anthropology, and archaeology. Anne O’Connor draws on a wealth of lively, personal correspondence to explain the nature of these arguments. The trail leads from Britain to Continental Europe, Africa, and Asia, and extends beyond the world of professors, museum keepers, and officers of the Geological Survey: wine sellers, diamond merchants, papermakers, and clerks also proposed timescales for the Palaeolithic. This book brings their stories to light for the first time-stories that offer an intriguing insight into how knowledge was built up about the ancient British past.

The Fox Spirit, the Stone Maiden, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China

Free Download Matthew H. Sommer, "The Fox Spirit, the Stone Maiden, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China"
English | ISBN: 0231214138 | 2024 | 384 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In imperial China, people moved away from the gender they were assigned at birth in different ways and for many reasons. Eunuchs, boy actresses, and clergy left behind normative gender roles defined by family and procreation. "Stone maidens"―women deemed physically incapable of vaginal intercourse―might depart from families or marriages to become Buddhist or Daoist nuns. Anatomical males who presented as women sometimes took a conventionally female occupation such as midwife, faith healer, or even medium to a fox spirit. Yet they were often punished harshly for the crime of "masquerading in women’s attire," suspected of sexual predation, even when they had lived peacefully in their communities for many years.
