Tommy Atkins The Story of the English Soldier

Free Download John Laffin, "Tommy Atkins: The Story of the English Soldier"
English | ISBN: 0752460668 | 2011 | 224 pages | EPUB | 505 KB
Tommy Atkins is the English soldier who joking broke the cavalry of France at Minden, who singing marched with the Great Duke to the Danube, who grumbling shattered Napoleon’s dreams at Waterloo, who sweating in his red coat tramped back and forth across India, who kept his six-rounds-to-the-minute at Mons, and who died in the mud at Passchendaele, the sands of the Western Desert, and the jungles of Burma. If his name has been eclipsed by his more illustrious commanders-Cromwell, Marlborough, Moore, Wolfe, Wellington, Allenby, Slim-they at least will accord him his rightful place beside them. They knew his worth. Tommy Atkins is his story-the story of this most versatile, most adaptable, most unmilitary soldier.

Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as Peterborough City Council, all lay claim to a part of the Fens. Since Roman times, man has increased the land mass in this area by one third of the size. It is the largest plain in the British Isles, covering an area of nearly three-quarters of a million acres and is unique to the UK. The fen people know the area as marsh (land reclaimed from the sea) and fen (land drained from flooding rivers running from the uplands). The Fens are unique in having more miles of navigable waterways than anywhere else in the UK. Mammoth drainage schemes in the seventeenth and eighteenth changed the landscape forever – leading slowly but surely to the area so loved today. Insightful, entertaining and full of rich incident, here is the fascinating story of the Fens.

The Severn Tsunami The Story of Britain’s Greatest Natural Disaster

Free Download Mike Hall, "The Severn Tsunami? The Story of Britain’s Greatest Natural Disaster"
English | ISBN: 0752470159 | 2013 | 160 pages | EPUB | 7 MB
On January 30, 1607, a huge wave, over 7 meters high, swept up the River Severn, flooding the land on either side. The wall of water reached as far inland as Bristol and Cardiff. It swept away everything in its path, devastating communities and killing thousands of people. Historian and geographer Mike Hall pieces together the contemporary accounts and the surviving physical evidence to present, for the first time, a comprehensive picture of what actually happened on that fateful day and its consequences. He also examines the possible causes of the disaster: was it just a storm surge, or was it, in fact, the only recorded instance of a tsunami in Britain?

2024 | 222 Pages | ISBN: 153261781X | EPUB | 1 MB
The Glasites or Sandemanians were a branch of the church with their roots in Scotland, but who spread much wider. This study seeks to explore their distinctives, both of theology and practice, and to place them in a wider context. The examination of a small sect serves to illuminate the wider story, and this particular community nurtured within it several eminent thinkers whose influence has been of deep importance-not the least, the scientific pioneer Michael Faraday. In exploring both their growth and their decline, the author seeks to convey something of the flavor of this part of the church and to consider what their legacy is.

Free Download Ewan Corlett – The Iron Ship: The Story of Brunel’s SS Great Britain
Conway Maritime Press | 1990 | ISBN: 0851775497 | English | 228 pages | PDF | 137.72 MB
This a very in-depth work, which doesn’t simply present the ship in a vacuum, and is a full-blooded maritime history that isn’t deathly dull to boot. The book goes into quite a bit of detail on the early history of iron shipbuilding, steam propelling machinery, and the achievements of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his father Marc. The development and construction of the ship, her machinery, and General Arrangements are also covered in some depth. About 100 pages are devoted to her career, from triumphant introduction into service, to her "end" in 1937 as an ancient coaling hulk scuttled off the Falkland Islands. There’s also a number of detailed appendixes, including specifications of the ship and machinery, information on each voyage, an accident log, and a thorough glossary.
