While it’s 1987 publication date makes it rather dated today, "Modern Submarine Warfare" remains a fascinating book for modern naval and submarine enthusiasts. The book covers a lot of ground, from hull design, sensor, weapons, and propulsion systems, anti-submarine tactics, to modern and historic submarine types, without being TOO detailed. The graphical style, two-page perspective views of modern submarines, and the large number of color photographs, cross-sections, graphs, and diagrams, make this probably the most eye-catching submarine reference.

Subsmash The Mysterious Disappearance of HM Submarine Affray

Free Download Alan Gallop, "Subsmash: The Mysterious Disappearance of HM Submarine Affray"
English | ISBN: 0752459309 | 2011 | 206 pages | EPUB | 557 KB
In April 1951, the disappearance of HM submarine Affray knocked news of the Korean War and Festival of Britain from the front pages. Affray had put to sea on a routine peacetime simulated war patrol in the English Channel. She radioed her last position at 2115hrs on 16 April, 30 miles south of the Isle of Wight – preparing to dive. This was the last signal ever received from the submarine. After months of searching, divers eventually discovered Affray resting upright on the sea bottom with no obvious signs of damage to her hull. Hatches were closed tight and emergency buoys were still in their casings. It was obvious that whatever had caused Affray to sink, and had ended the lives of all those on board, had occurred quickly. Sixty years later, in this compelling maritime investigation, Alan Gallop uses previously top secret documents, interviews with experts and contemporary news sources to explore how and why Affray became the last British submarine lost at sea – and possibly the greatest maritime mystery since the Marie Celeste.

The Japanese Submarine Force and World War II

Free Download The Japanese Submarine Force and World War II By Carl Boyd, Akihiko Yoshida
2013 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 1557500150 | PDF | 9 MB
When first published in 1995, this book was hailed as an absolutely indispensable contribution to the history of the Pacific War. Drawing heavily from Japanese sources and American wartime intercepts of secret Japanese radio messages, a noted American naval historian and a Japanese mariner painstakingly recorded and evaluated a diverse array of material about Japan’s submarines in World War II.The study begins with the development of the first Japanese 103-ton Holland-type submergible craft in 1905 and continues through the 1945 surrender of the largest submarine in the world at the time, the 5300-ton I-400 class that carried three airplanes. Submarine weapons, equipment, personnel, and shore support systems are discussed first in the context of Japanese naval preparations for war and later during the war. Both successes and missed opportunities are analyzed in operations ranging from the California coast through the Pacific and Indian Oceans to the coast of German-occupied France. Appendixes include lists of Japanese submarine losses and the biographies of key Japanese submarine officers. Rare illustrations and specifically commissioned operational maps enhance the text.
