America is a society that encompasses and reflects the accomplish- ments of science. As civilized people, we can argue that to understand America is to und erstand the scientific genius of the men and women who built the foundations of modern science and technology. However, science is not merely a co11ection of the results of scientific research or inte11ectual wizardry. It is also a social phenomenon with real human beings with a11 their foibles. As George Sarton said, "The best way to explain American achievements is to focus the reader’s attention upon a few of the leading scientists." That I have tried to do. While there are other valid approaches to the history of science, certainly the biographi- cal approach brings to ligh t the fact that science is not a mere congerie of facts and theories. It is a very human activity with biases, personal rivalries, censorship, and even thievery, as the case of Rosalind Franklin shows.

Jews and Arabs in Israel Encountering Their Identities Transformations in Dialogue

Free Download Maya Kahanoff, "Jews and Arabs in Israel Encountering Their Identities: Transformations in Dialogue"
English | ISBN: 1498504973 | 2016 | 280 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Jews and Arabs in Israel Encountering their Identities reveals the powerful potential of inter-group dialogues to transform identities and mutually negating relations. Using meetings with Israeli Jewish and Palestinian Arabian students who attend the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as case studies, Kahanoff examines the hidden psychological dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and illustrates how each participant’s sense of identity shifted in response to encounters with conflicting perspectives. Kahanoff contends that an awareness of the limitations of dialogue, without the renunciation of its value, is the most realistic basis upon which to build a sustainable agreement. This book is recommended for scholars of psychology, sociology, religious studies, political science, and communication studies.

Tracing Their Tracks Identification of Nordic Styles from the Early Middle Ages to the End of the Viking Period

Understanding the relation of semiology to Western iconography is essential, as it is the element that, often unconsciously, influences perception in Western society. Scholars, such as Klaus Duwel with his outstanding knowledge of runic script, sometimes reach their limits if inscriptions are complemented with abstract images that may be accidental scratches or, on the other hand, a sign or signs indicating symbolic meaning. The detailed definition of the Medieval World by Margaret Clunies Ross (University of Sydney) created the background for this book in which artefacts from Old Norse culture are considered in order to understand their often complex context, providing an insight into the development of visual communication in Western society. Artefacts from Medieval Scandinavia show techniques and principles from visual perception consciously or unconsciously adopted by artists and craftsmen more than a thousand years earlier than was initially recognised by scientists. Today, such elements are recognised by some artists and designers. However, in the relevant literature, discussion of this important aspect of visual art with respect to Medieval Scandinavia has been lacking-until now!
