Word Formation and Transparency in Medical English

Free Download Pius ten Hacken, "Word Formation and Transparency in Medical English"
English | ISBN: 1443880027 | 2015 | 205 pages | PDF | 2 MB
As a side effect of the rapid progress in medical research and of the emergence of new medical conditions, medicine is a domain where new concepts have to be named more frequently than in many other domains. Because of the prominent position of English in medical research, most of these concepts are first named in English. This raises questions relating to the naming strategies adopted and the consequences of the choice of particular strategies. These consequences are not restricted to English, because the English terms often need to be translated and are sometimes borrowed. This volume consists of an introduction and eight chapters. The first four chapters focus on the choice of naming strategy and the consequences for the transparency of the resulting names in English. These chapters address the international pharmaceutical nomenclature, the terminology of psychiatry and of middle-ear surgery, and the use of neoclassical word formation. The following four chapters concentrate on the issues of translation and borrowing evolving from the choice of names in English. They address translation into Spanish, Slovak, Polish and Turkish.

Transparency in Science and the Effects on Public Policy

Free Download Transparency in Science and the Effects on Public Policy
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031556445 | 124 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4 MB
This book argues that, in the development of science, three principles have been used; transparency of results; transparency of procedures; financial transparency. Though the topic of transparency has been researched from various angles by many academics, none have made a comparison between the development of science in the last 350 years and the aforementioned principles. The author uniquely explains how these elements contributed to the rapid development of science and consequently that of technology and human wellbeing and suggests legislation for ensuring transparency in the public sector. In addition, this book provides numerous examples of successful new ways of using these principles in other activities in the public sector as well as possibilities of including the transparency principles from science publishing into general and internet media.

Transparency in Politics and the Media Accountability and Open Government

Free Download Nigel Bowles, "Transparency in Politics and the Media: Accountability and Open Government "
English | ISBN: 1780766750 | 2013 | 264 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Increasingly governments around the world are experimenting with initiatives in transparency or ‘open government’. These involve a variety of measures including the announcement of more user-friendly government websites, greater access to government data, the extension of freedom of information legislation and broader attempts to involve the public in government decision making. However, the role of the media in these initiatives has not hitherto been examined. This volume analyses the challenges and opportunities presented to journalists as they attempt to hold governments accountable in an era of professed transparency. In examining how transparency and open government initiatives have affected the accountability role of the press in the US and the UK, it also explores how policies in these two countries could change in the future to help journalists hold governments more accountable. This volume will be essential reading for all practicing journalists, for students of journalism or politics, and for policymakers.
