Narrator: Hillary Huber

Celebrated NPR music critic Ann Powers explores the life and career of Joni Mitchell in a lyrical style as fascinating and ethereal as the songs of the artist herself. "What you are about to read is not a standard account of the life and work of Joni Mitchell. Instead, it’s a tale of long journeying through a life that changed popular music: of a homesick wanderer forging ahead on routes of her own invention, and of me on her trail, heading toward the ringing of her voice." For decades, Joni Mitchell’s life and music have enraptured listeners. One of the most celebrated artists of her generation, Mitchell has inspired countless musicians-from peers like James Taylor, to inheritors like Prince and Brandi Carlile-and authors, who have dissected her music and her life in their writing. At the same time, Mitchell has always been a force beckoning us still closer, as-with the other arm-she pushes us away. Given this, music critic Ann Powers wondered if there was another way to draw insights from the life of this singular musician who never stops moving, never stops experimenting. In Traveling, Powers seeks to understand Mitchell through her myriad journeys.

Free Download David John Arnold, K. Sivaramakrishnan, "The Tropics and the Traveling Gaze: India, Landscape, and Science, 1800-1856"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0295993839, 029598581X | PDF | pages: 309 | 2.3 mb
The Tropics and the Traveling Gaze considers the European representation and understanding of landscape and nature in early nineteenth-century India. It draws on travel narratives, literary texts, and scientific literature to show the diversity of European (especially British) responses to the Indian environment and the ways in which these contributed to the wider colonizing process. Through its close examination of the correlation between tropicality and "otherness," and of science as a means of colonial appropriation, the book offers a new interpretation of the history of colonial India and a critical contribution to the understanding of environmental history and the tropical world. It will be of interest to historians of the environment, science, and colonialism; South Asianists; and cultural and environmental anthropologists and geographers.

Traveling Prehistoric Seas Critical Thinking on Ancient Transoceanic Voyages

Free Download Traveling Prehistoric Seas: Critical Thinking on Ancient Transoceanic Voyages By Alice Beck Kehoe
2016 | 217 Pages | ISBN: 1315416409 | PDF | 21 MB
Until recently the theory that people could have traversed large expanses of ocean in prehistoric times was considered pseudoscience. But recent discoveries in places as disparate as Australia, Labrador, Crete, California, and Chile open the possibility that ancient oceans were highways, not barriers, and that ancient people possessed the means and motives to traverse them. In this brief, thought-provoking, but controversial book Alice Kehoe considers the existing evidence in her reassessment of ancient sailing. Her book-critically analyzes the growing body of evidence on prehistoric sailing to help scholars and students evaluate a highly controversial hypothesis;-examines evidence from archaeology, anthropology, botany, art, mythology, linguistics, maritime technology, architecture, paleopathology, and other disciplines;-presents her evidence in student-accessible language to allow instructors to use this work for teaching critical thinking skills.

Transatlantic Elective Affinities Traveling Ideas and Their Mediators

Free Download Waldemar Zacharaswiewicz, "Transatlantic Elective Affinities: Traveling Ideas and Their Mediators "
English | ISBN: 3700185049 | 2021 | 228 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This volume is the result of an international workshop in which scholars from several disciplines explored less familiar instances of the exchange of ideas across the Atlantic. In the 19th century many American graduates both in the humanities, social and natural sciences as well as medicine, appreciating the progress in these fields of learning in continental Europe, and noting an elective affinity with their peers there, spent time at universities and medical institutions in German-speaking countries and then tried to reform their educational and academic institutions on the basis of transatlantic models. American institutions also recruited scientists from Central Europe for their work. The book also describes new alliances in the field of politics in the 20th century, and analyses the formation of a joint transatlantic peace movement intent on preventing a nuclear apocalypse in the Cold War. It also traces the influence of continental European philosophy and of individual philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein in the USA and Canada, and investigates the inspiration of new branches of philosophy, like film philosophy, in Central Europe.
