English | ISBN: 160741502X | 2010 | 275 pages | PDF | 13 MB
The Earth houses a vast energy supply in the form of geothermal resources. Domestic resources are equivalent to a 30,000 year energy supply at our current rate for the United States. Geothermal energy is used in all 50 U.S. states today. But, geothermal energy has not reached its full potential as a clean secure energy alternative because of issues with resources, technology, historically low natural gas prices, and public policies. These issues affect the economic competitiveness of geothermal energy. This book explores geothermal energy’s viability, risk and cost analysis.

Reversibility – Politics under Conditions of Uncertainty

Free Download Reversibility – Politics under Conditions of Uncertainty by Harmut Behr
English | June 15, 2024 | ISBN: 0228020840 | 246 pages | MOBI | 1.25 Mb
Western modernity is characterized by instrumental relations between humans and nature, as well as between humans themselves, that have caused irreversible environmental and social exploitation and degradation. Many policy documents, such as those by the United Nations Environment Programme, warn of the uncertainty and unpredictability of our precarious conditions due to our social and ecological interrelations and interdependencies. Accepting that our position in the world does not allow us secure knowledge of the consequences of politics, Reversibility – Politics under Conditions of Uncertainty asks how we can act politically in a responsible way when we cannot predict the outcomes of our decisions. Hartmut Behr diagnoses Western modernity and its manifold crises as dominated by the view that fellow humans and natural environments are merely means to our individual ends. Behr introduces a novel ethics of self-restraint and the principle of reversibility – a commitment to political actions whose effects shall not be indefinite or immutable – to build a policy framework that demands both ethical and practical reflection on the conditions of action and that accounts for the limitations under which we act and live. Identifying an urgent need for re-thinking political progress and for policy reform, Reversibility – Politics under Conditions of Uncertainty presents a new understanding of the self and of political responsibility centred in a genuine acknowledgment of the human condition.

Intelligent Counting Under Information Imprecision Applications to Intelligent Systems and Decision Support

Free Download Intelligent Counting Under Information Imprecision: Applications to Intelligent Systems and Decision Support By Maciej Wygralak (auth.)
2013 | 292 Pages | ISBN: 3642346847 | PDF | 5 MB
Counting belongs to the most elementary and frequent mental activities of human beings. Its results are a basis for coming to a decision in a lot of situations and dimensions of our life. This book presents a novel approach to the advanced and sophisticated case, called intelligent counting, in which the objects of counting are imprecisely, fuzzily specified. Formally, this collapses to counting in fuzzy sets, interval-valued fuzzy sets or I-fuzzy sets (Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets). The monograph is the first one showing and emphasizing that the presented methods of intelligent counting are human-consistent: are reflections and formalizations of real, human counting procedures performed under imprecision and, possibly, incompleteness of information. Other applications of intelligent counting in various areas of intelligent systems and decision support will be discussed, too.The whole presentation is self-contained, systematic, and equipped with many examples, figures and tables. Computer and information scientists, researchers, engineers and practitioners, applied mathematicians, and postgraduate students interested in information imprecision are the target readers.
