An Empire of Schools Japan’s Universities and the Molding of a National Power Elite

English | 1997 | ISBN: 1563248433 | EPUB | pages: 286 | 0.6 mb
Based on in-depth analysis, extensive interviews, and a journalist’s keen insight, An Empire of Schools provides a new framework to explore the misunderstandings that have arisen between Japan and the United States. The vital determining issue that complicates U.S.-Sino communications, Cutts says, is not the cultural incompatibilities of the people or economies but the fact that all Japanese leaders emerge from the same educational treadmill or "cartels of the mind." This revered system, crowned by five national and private universities, and from which almost all Japanese leaders emerge, teaches its students that they are inherently incapable of sharing their values, civic or personal, with those of any other civilization. Describing an educational system that has been left fundamentally unchanged since the Meiji Empire, Cutts depicts the elites who graduate from the system, describes what ethical philosophy is imparted to those graduates, and warns of the dangers of nationalist elitism that arise from the system. Filled with personal anecdotes as well as critical interviews, An Empire of Schools traces the potential consequences to Japan and the Pacific Rim of an educational system that begins imparting an elitist doctrine in kindergarten that extends to the highest levels of Japanese government.

Buddhist-Based Universities in the United States Searching for a New Model in Higher Education

Free Download Tanya Storch, "Buddhist-Based Universities in the United States: Searching for a New Model in Higher Education"
English | ISBN: 0739184083 | 2015 | 136 pages | PDF | 865 KB
Buddhist-Based Universities in the United States: Searching for a New Model in Higher Education investigates in depth four American Buddhist universities, namely, the Dharma Realm Buddhist University, the University of the West, the Soka University of America, and the Naropa University, all of which offer degrees in liberal arts and professional fields, and at the same time educate their students in the philosophy and practices of Buddhism. Buddhist universities in the United States are unique because there are no comparable universities based on the philosophy and practices of other Asian religions also popular in the United States, such as Hinduism, Confucianism, or Sikhism. Even the Jewish community has created only two universities in which professional skills and liberal arts are taught from the position of the moral-philosophical principles of Judaism. This book presents the institutional history and academic programs of four Buddhist universities in America and analyzes Buddhist-based pedagogical principles, as well as teaching and learning techniques, which can be very useful for other colleges and universities in the United States.

1995 | 455 Pages | ISBN: 1461586410 | PDF | 12 MB
HE ninth Scottish Universities’ Summer School in Physics, sponsored T jointly by the Scottish Universities and NATO was held at Newbattle Abbey from 28th July to 16th August 1968. This was the first Scottish Summer School to be devoted to plasma physics, the exact title for the School being the Physics of Hot Plasmas. Forty-three students were accepted, fourteen of these being resident in the United Kingdom. In addition there were eleven lecturers and seven other participants. The choice of lecturers, particularly in experimental plasma physics, was limited to some extent by the fact that an international conference on con trolled fusion was held at Novosibirsk during the first week in August. Not withstanding this, it was possible to arrange a programme of lectures reasonably well balanced between theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The topics chosen included kinetic theory, waves and oscillations, instabilities, turbulence, collisionless shocks, computational methods, laser scattering and laser generated plasmas, plasma production and containment. Several semi nars on special topics were given by invited speakers and by students.

The age of knowledge the dynamics of universities, knowledge and society

Free Download The age of knowledge: the dynamics of universities, knowledge and society By James Dzisah, Henry Etzkowitz (editors)
2011 | 356 Pages | ISBN: 9004211020 | PDF | 2 MB
The Age of Knowledge emphasizes that the ongoing transformations of knowledge, both within universities and for society more generally, must be understood as a reflection of the larger changes in the constitutive social structures within which they are invariably produced, translated and reproduced. As the development of knowledge continues to be implicated in the habitual practices of the human social enterprise, visualizing these alterations requires the consideration of the social and materialistic contexts informing these transformations. This is necessary because the process of globalization has not only created new challenges for societies but has also unleashed a new political economy of knowledge within which different institutions must re-affirm their identity and place.
