The Threads of Natural Law Unravelling a Philosophical Tradition

Free Download The Threads of Natural Law: Unravelling a Philosophical Tradition By Jesús Vega (auth.), Francisco José Contreras (eds.)
2013 | 242 Pages | ISBN: 9400756550 | PDF | 3 MB
The notion of "natural law" has repeatedly furnished human beings with a shared grammar in times of moral and cultural crisis. Stoic natural law, for example, emerged precisely when the Ancient World lost the Greek polis, which had been the point of reference for Plato’s and Aristotle’s political philosophy. In key moments such as this, natural law has enabled moral and legal dialogue between peoples and traditions holding apparently clashing world-views. This volume revisits some of these key moments in intellectual and social history, partly with an eye to extracting valuable lessons for ideological conflicts in the present and perhaps near future. The contributions to this volume discuss both historical and contemporary schools of natural law. Topics on historical schools of natural law include: how Aristotelian theory of rules paved the way for the birth of the idea of "natural law"; the idea’s first mature account in Cicero’s work; the tension between two rival meanings of "man’s rational nature" in Aquinas’ natural law theory; and the scope of Kant’s allusions to "natural law". Topics on contemporary natural law schools include: John Finnis’s and Germain Grisez’s "new natural law theory"; natural law theories in a "broader" sense, such as Adolf Reinach’s legal phenomenology; Ortega y Gasset’s and Scheler’s "ethical perspectivism"; the natural law response to Kelsen’s conflation of democracy and moral relativism; natural law’s role in 20th century international law doctrine; Ronald Dworkin’s understanding of law as "a branch of political morality"; and Alasdair Macintyre’s "virtue"-based approach to natural law.

1997 | 276 Pages | ISBN: 0333659465 | PDF | 48 MB
The Apocalypse of John is perhaps the most alluring and dangerous text in any scripture. This study looks at English responses to it in political pamphlets and scholarly exegesis, in poetry and preaching and visual art. Those who set out to find enduring meaning in the book failed. Yet in the post-Christian re-writings of Revelation by Shelley and Blake, John’s own dynamic of unveiling comes to life, subverting the structures of power and reading built on the visions of Patmos.

‘Rahill is a stylist of the highest calibre… Molly’s voice has a lilting brogue that sings from the page. Rahill’s prose is alive with inventive phrasings and imagistic virtuosity, especially in its presentation of the intimate experience of the fleshly body – the maternal body, the cruelly waning body, the body tormented by a conflicted and unravelling mind. I’ve seldom read a novel so rich in poetry’ GUARDIAN.

English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 308 Pages | ISBN : 303146656X | 9.7 MB
This book provides an interdisciplinary examination of Peruvian cuisine’s shift from a culinary to a political object and the making of Peru as a food nation on the global stage. It focuses on the contexts, processes and protagonists that have endowed the country’s cuisine with new meaning, new coherence and prominence, and with the ability to communicate what was important for Peruvians after decades of political violence and economic decline. This work unfolds central processes of the culinary project ranging from the emergence of gastronomy, to the refiguring of indigenous people as producers, to the use of cultural identity as an authenticating force. From the Plate to Gastro-Politics offers a critical reading of what has been called a "gastronomic revolution", highlighting the ways in which claims to national unity and social reconciliation smooth over ongoing inequalities.
