Once Upon a Universe Not-so-Grimm tales of cosmology

Free Download Once Upon a Universe: Not-so-Grimm tales of cosmology By Robert Gilmore
2003 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 1441930590 | PDF | 14 MB
"Once upon a time there was no Universe," began the Storyteller. . . ."First Snow White encounters one of the Little People, then one of the Even Smaller People, and finally one of the Truly Infinitesimal People. And no matter how diligently she searches, the only dwarves she can find are collapsed stars! Clearly, she’s not at home in her well-known Brothers Grimm fairy tale, but instead in a strange new landscape that features quantum behavior, the wavelike properties of particles, and the Uncertainty Principle. She (and we) must have entered, in short, one of the worlds created by Robert Gilmore, the physicist and fabulist who brought us the classic "Alice in Quantumland."Whether he’s recasting such classic tales as "Jack and the Quarkstalk," "Waking Beauty," or "Cinderenda and the Death of Stars," Gilmore shows us that there’s more than one way to shed light on the strange profundities of modern physics and cosmology, and what they have to tell us about the nature of time and space and motion. Black holes, dying stars, traveling backward through time to the Big Bang – they’re all here in accessible, instructive, and charmingly illustrated retellings.Robert Gilmore has published three previous books with Copernicus, "Alice in Quantumland," "Scrooge’s Cryptic Carol," and "The Wizard of Quarks." He is a Visiting Research Fellow, with a special focus on the public understanding of science, at Bristol University in England. He has also worked in particle physics at Brookhaven, Stanford, and CERN in Geneva.

Upon What Does the Turtle Stand Rethinking Education for the Digital Age

Free Download Upon What Does the Turtle Stand?: Rethinking Education for the Digital Age By Aharon Aviram, Janice Richardson (auth.), Aharon Aviram, Janice Richardson (eds.)
2005 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 1402027982 | PDF | 2 MB
This book brings together the reflections of independent researchers from around the world. Sixteen authors from fourteen countries present their views on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education, offering valuable insights through the examination of current issues relevant to the future of education. What will education be in tomorrow’s world? How can ICT be used without rendering education a purely technical process? How can we succeed the renovation of educational subjects without transforming them into technical objects? The introductory chapter of this publication guides us into the essays through a classification organized by the editors to illustrate different attitudes to technologies: * The ‘Globalizers’ see the integration of ICT and education as a means of enhancing the competitiveness of their society in a global economy; * The ‘Reformists’ see it as a means of bringing about significant change in didactics in the various disciplines, and even in the ‘basics’ of education; * The ‘Humanists’ consider technologies as possible catalysts for changing the aims and values of education from learni- oriented to humanistic; * The ‘Heretic’ sees values and aims as being determined exclusively by technology, and economy and culture as s- products of the technology-guided process. He therefore does not see any sense in interrogations as to which aims should guide us in integrating technology with education. Obviously, some arguments stretch across all four categories without completely matching any so-called type.

Once Upon a Secret My Affair with President John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath

Free Download Once Upon a Secret: My Affair with President John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath By Mimi Alford
2012 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 1400069106 | EPUB | 3 MB
In the summer of 1962, nineteen-year-old Mimi Beardsley arrived by train in Washington, D.C., to begin an internship in the White House press office. The Kennedy Administration had reinvigorated the capital and the country-and Mimi was eager to contribute. For a young woman from a privileged but sheltered upbringing, the job was the chance of a lifetime. Although she started as a lowly intern, Mimi made an impression on Kennedy’s inner circle and, after just three days at the White House, she was presented to the President himself. Almost immediately, the two began an affair that would continue for the next eighteen months. In an era when women in the workplace were still considered "girls," Mimi was literally a girl herself-naïve, innocent, emotionally unprepared for the thrill that came when the President’s charisma and power were turned on her full-force. She was also unprepared for the feelings of isolation that would follow as she fell into the double life of a college student who was also the secret lover of the most powerful man in the world. Then, after the President’s tragic death in Dallas, she grieved in private, locked her secret away, and tried to start her life anew, only to find that her past would cast a long shadow-and ultimately destroy her relationship with the man she married. In 2003, a Kennedy biographer mentioned "a tall, slender, beautiful nineteen-year-old college sophomore and White House intern, who worked in the press office" in reference to one of the President’s affairs. The disclosure set off a tabloid frenzy and soon exposed Mimi and the secret that she had kept for forty-one years. Because her past had been revealed in such a shocking, public way, she was forced, for the first time, to examine the choices she’d made. She came to understand that shutting down one part of her life so completely had closed her off from so much more. No longer defined by silence or shame, Mimi Alford has finally unburdened herself with this searingly honest account of her life and her extremely private moments with a very public man. Once Upon a Secret offers a new and personal depiction of one of our most iconic leaders and a powerful, moving story of a woman coming to terms with her past and moving out of the shadows to reclaim the truth.
