This book provides new empirical evidence about the ways in which social inequalities, especially those of class, shape and delimit forms of cultural reception and creative opportunity. How does it come about that, in George Orwell’s words, ‘the divorce between poetry and popular culture is accepted as a sort of law of nature’? Drawing on qualitative research conducted in and around Glasgow, Poetry, Class and Symbolic Violence explores how working-class readers engaged with, made sense of, and contested a sense of exclusion from, contemporary poetry. In doing so it sheds light on the symbolic enclosure of poetry, on how that enclosure takes shape in the encounter between readers and poems, but also on why poetry continues to matter. Through these conversations, and in further interviews with unpublished poets, it reflects on the creative and expressive affordances of poetry, on what can be done with poetry and what it can make possible. Sociologists have had little to say about poetry as a distinctive esthetic practice.

English | 2019 | pages: 252 | ISBN: 3030263789, 3030263754 | PDF | 2,7 mb
This edited volume deploys digital ethnography in varied contexts to explore the cultural roles of mobile apps that focus on religious practice and communities, as well as those used for religious purposes (whether or not they were originally developed for that purpose). Combining analyses of local contexts with insights and methods from the global subfield of digital anthropology, the contributors here recognize the complex ways that in-app and on-ground worlds interact in a wide range of communities and traditions. While some of the case studies emphasize the cultural significance of use in local contexts and relationships to pre-existing knowledge networks and/or non-digital relationships of power, others explore the globalizing and democratizing influences of mobile apps as communication technologies. From Catholic confession apps to Jewish Kaddish assistance apps and Muslim halal food apps, readers will see how religious-themed mobile apps create complex sites for potential new forms of religious expression, worship, discussion, and practices.

Uses and Misuses of Inflation and Price Indices

Free Download Jeff Ralph, Paul A. Smith, "Uses and Misuses of Inflation and Price Indices"
English | ISBN: 152757069X | 2024 | 217 pages | PDF | 1 MB
In recent years, the sharp rise in inflation across the world has brought about challenges for businesses and households alike. In the UK, many pay offers have not met the expectations of employees resulting in widespread strikes. The action of the Bank of England in raising interest rates to bring inflation down has led to sharp rises in mortgage interest rates, putting further pressure on households. This book explores what is meant by inflation and how we go about measuring it. It recounts the history of price rises over the past few decades and how pensions, pay and benefits have been affected. It also examines the political and economic factors that have driven government responses to inflation. The book completes the broad picture of recent price changes by looking at house prices, rents, and business prices, as well as how they are reported as official statistics.

Particular emphasis is placed on those systems which are of industrial significance. The preparation, properties and applications of the ruthenium complexes are described, followed by a presentation of their oxidative properties and summary of the different mechanisms involved in the organic oxidations (e.g. oxidations of alcohols, alkenes, arenes and alkynes, alkanes, amines, ethers, phopshines and miscellaneous substrates). Moreover, future trends and developments in the area are discussed.

In the Mirror of the Prodigal Son provides a comprehensive history of the function of the parable of the prodigal son in shaping religious identity in medieval and Reformation Europe. By investigating a wealth of primary sources, the book reveals the interaction between commentaries, sermons, religious plays, and images as a decisive factor in the increasing popularity of the prodigal son. Pietro Delcorno highlights the ingenious and multifaceted uses of the parable within pastoral activities and shows the pervasive presence of the Bible in medieval communication. The prodigal son narrative became the ideal story to convey a discourse about sin and penance, grace and salvation. In this way, the parable was established as the paradigmatic biography of any believer.

Human Uses of Outer Space Return to the Moon (Issues in Space)

Free Download Human Uses of Outer Space: Return to the Moon (Issues in Space) by Melissa de Zwart, Stacey Henderson, John Culton
English | January 26, 2023 | ISBN: 9811994617 | 162 pages | MOBI | 1.60 Mb
This book takes a unique interdisciplinary approach to the planned return of humans to the Moon. With the Artemis Project, the US and its partners have planned an ambitious project with the creation of the Lunar Gateway, to be followed by the landing of the first woman and next man on the Moon. This book explains that the Artemis project then forms the basis of planned sustained human missions to Mars. Russia and China have also announced their intentions to establish a permanent base on the Moon and have commenced the deployment of modules which will form part of this project. This book states that whilst there has been a permanent human presence in Low Earth Orbit since 2000, with the continued crew rotation on the International Space Station, perhaps the most successful international collaboration of modern times, the establishment of a base on the Moon will generate new challenges for human survival and success.
