From the civil wars in Colombia, Nepal, and Syria, to the revolutions in Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, and the fervent uprisings of the Arab Spring, recent decades have vividly demonstrated that rebellion is in the air. In this groundbreaking study, Ruolin Su delves into the intricate dynamics of violent policy choices made by rebel leaders amid domestic turmoil. How does a history of rebellion shape a leader’s inclination towards violence when they ascend to power? When do these leaders turn to violence abroad, and to what extent does it bolster their hold on power at home? This book is an indispensable resource for political scientists and scholars dedicated to understanding the complexities of post-rebellion states and international security.

Politics and Violence in Eastern Africa The Struggles of Emerging States

English | 2017 | ISBN: 1138059617, 113884666X | EPUB | pages: 212 | 0.7 mb
Over the fifty years between 1940 and 1990, the countries of eastern Africa were embroiled in a range of debilitating and destructive conflicts, starting with the wars of independence, but then incorporating rebellion, secession and local insurrection as the Cold War replaced colonialism. The articles gathered here illustrate how significant, widespread, and dramatic this violence was. In these years, violence was used as a principal instrument in the creation and consolidation of the authority of the state; and it was also regularly and readily utilised by those who wished to challenge state authority through insurrection and secession. Why was it that eastern Africa should have experienced such extensive and intensive violence in the fifty years before 1990? Was this resort to violence a consequence of imperial rule, the legacy of oppressive colonial domination under a coercive and non-representative state system? Did essential contingencies such as the Cold War provoke and promote the use of violence? Or, was it a choice made by Africans themselves and their leaders, a product of their own agency? This book focuses on these turbulent decades, exploring the principal conflicts in six key countries – Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Tanzania.

Religion and Space Competition, Conflict and Violence in the Contemporary World

Free Download Lily Kong, "Religion and Space: Competition, Conflict and Violence in the Contemporary World"
English | ISBN: 1474257402 | 2016 | 216 pages | PDF | 1201 KB
This is the first study to bring space into conversation with religious competition, conflict and violence in the contemporary world. Lily Kong and Orlando Woods argue that because space is both a medium and an outcome of religious activity, it is integral to understanding processes of religious competition, conflict and violence. The book explores how religious groups make claims to both religious and secular spaces, and examines how such claims are managed, negotiated and contested by the state and by other secular and religious agencies. It also examines how globalisation has given rise to new forms of religious competition, and how religious groups strengthen themselves through the development of social resilience, as well as contribute to resilient societies.

A prominent public intellectual tackles one of the most crucial political ideas of our moment. A concept new to most Americans, but already established and influential in academic circles, settler colonialism is shaping the way many people think about the history of the United States, Israel and Palestine, and a host of political issues. This short book is the first to examine settler colonialism critically for a general audience.
