Understanding the importance of focus is crucial for adults striving to achieve their personal goals. Focus serves as the lens through which individuals can clarify their objectives, prioritize their actions, and maintain motivation throughout the journey. When one is focused, distractions diminish, and the path toward goal attainment becomes more navigable. The ability to concentrate on a specific goal not only enhances productivity but also fosters a deeper connection to the intended outcomes, making the process feel more meaningful. By understanding the significance of focus, individuals can harness its power to propel themselves toward success.

Basic and Clinical Perspectives in Vision Research A Celebration of the Career of Hisako Ikeda

Free Download Basic and Clinical Perspectives in Vision Research: A Celebration of the Career of Hisako Ikeda By John L. Barbur (auth.), Jon G. Robbins, Mustafa B. A. Djamgoz, Anthony Taylor (eds.)
1995 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 1475793642 | PDF | 10 MB
I have been asked to write a brief foreword to this volume honoring Hisako Ikeda, providing a review of the accomplishments in our field over the past four decades, when Hisako was an active participant. This I am delighted to do. It has been a most exciting time in vision research and Hisako has been right in the middle of much of the excitement, publishing on a wide variety of topics and providing much new data and many new insights. Hisako’s research career can be divided by decades into four quite distinct areas of inquiry. In the 1950s, as a student in Japan, her research interests were psychophysical in nature, and she was concerned with visual illusions, figural aftereffects, and motion detec tion. In the 1960s, after her move to London, she began electrophysiological studies. Much of her work in the 1960s was concerned with the electroretinogram (ERG), its components, and the use of this electrical response for evaluating spectral sensitivities of the eye and retinal degenerations. This work represented the beginning of her electrodiagnostic clinical work, which continued until her retirement.

Attention and Performance in Computational Vision

Inrecentresearchoncomputervisionsystems, attentionhasbeenplayingacrucialrolein mediatingbottom-upandtop-downpathsofinformationprocessing. Inappliedresearch, the development of enabling technologies such as miniaturized mobile sensors, video surveillance systems, and ambient intelligence systems involves the real-time analysis of enormous quantities of data. Knowledge has to be applied about what needs to be attendedto, andwhen, andwhattodoinameaningfulsequence, incorrespondencewith visual feedback. Methods on attention and control are mandatory to render computer vision systems more robust. The 2nd International Workshop on Attention and Performance in Computational Vision (WAPCV 2004) was held in the Czech Technical University of Prague, Czech Republic, as an associated workshop of the 8th European Conference on Computer – sion (ECCV 2004). The goal of this workshop was to provide an interdisciplinary forum tocommunicatecomputationalmodelsofvisualattentionfromvariousviewpoints, such as from computer vision, psychology, robotics and neuroscience. The motivation for – terdisciplinarity was communication and inspiration beyond the individual community, to focus discussion on computational modelling, to outline relevant objectives for p- formance comparison, to explore promising application domains, and to discuss these with reference to all related aspects of cognitive vision. The workshop was held as a single-day, single-track event, consisting of high-quality podium and poster presen- tions. Invited talks were given by John K. Tsotsos about attention and feature binding in biologically motivated computer vision and by Gustavo Deco about the context of attention, memory and reward from the perspective of computational neuroscience. The interdisciplinary program committee wascomposed of 21 internationally r- ognized researchers.

Polarized Light in Animal Vision Polarization Patterns in Nature

Free Download Polarized Light in Animal Vision: Polarization Patterns in Nature By Dr. habil. Gábor Horváth, Prof. Dr. Dezső Varjú (auth.)
2004 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 3642073344 | PDF | 13 MB
While the human eye can practically cope only with two aspects of light, brightness and colour, for many animals polarization is a further source of visual information. This fascinating phenomenon of polarization sensitivity is comprehensively treated by Horvath and Varju. Starting with a short introduction into imaging polarimetry – an efficient technique for measuring light polarization – various polarization patterns occurring in nature are presented. Among them are the polarizational characteristics of water surfaces, mirages and the underwater light field as well as the celestial polarization patterns affected by the illumination conditions of sunrise, sunset, clear or cloudy skies, moonshine and total solar eclipses. The major part of the book is dedicated to the question: How can animals perceive and use the natural and artificial polarization patterns? Following a detailed compendium of the physiological basis of polarization sensitivity, several case studies of animal behaviour determined or influenced by polarization are presented. It is shown how arial, terrestrial and aquatic animals use the celestial and underwater polarization for orientation, e. g. how polarized light serves honeybees or ants as a compass. Further, it is explained how man-made objects affecting the natural optical environment may disorientate animals. For instance, as in the case where oil or glass surfaces, asphalt roads, or plastic sheets used in agriculture can be more attractive for water-seeking polarotactic insects than the water surface, and where mayflies lay their eggs on dry asphalt roads or cars.
