Peace Advocacy in the Shadow of War

For peace advocates a corollary to Clausewitz’s dictum that "war is politics by other means" might be that other politics could prevent war. By highlighting both individual peace advocates and antiwar/peace organizations from World War I through the wars of the 21st century, the chapters will provide insights into how these individuals and organizations articulated their opposition to and mobilized against specific wars and international/regional conflicts. Organized roughly in chronological order, each chapter will illuminate the socio-historical conditions under which such peace advocacy contested state aggression and armed combat at the national and/or transnational levels. Beyond understanding the specific socio-historical circumstances within which these antiwar and peace advocates and organizations operated and their resultant achievements and failures, the book as a whole will examine the kind of politics that perpetuate war and those that offer a challenge to that perpetuation. Scholars, students, and the general public interested in the history of modern and contemporary wars, peace and conflict studies, and ethical/political perspectives in the 20th and 21st centuries should find much to reflect upon in this book.

Ironically, the horrors of World War One produced a splendid flowering of British verse as young poets, many of them combatants, confronted their own morality, the death of dear friends, the loss of innocence, the failure of civilization, and the madness of war itself.

The Quantum Gravity War

Free Download The Quantum Gravity War: How Will the Nearby Unification of Physics Change Future Warfare?
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9814968587 | 321 Pages | PDF (True) | 21 MB
Imagine a civilization with a technology so powerful that a single push of the "wrong" button could destroy this very entire civilization. As the consideration of future warfare requires the inclusion of a unified physics, we have to deal with complex concepts of Quantum Theory and General Theory of Relativity. The two have to be brought together before we are able to deal with the matter of future warfare technology in a satisfactory manner. That such a "Theory of Everything" or "Theory of Quantum Gravity"-in principle-already exists and had been already derived by the great German mathematician David Hilbert. When digging deeper and looking for applications of the "new" theory, we realized that many of the new possibilities could also lead to quite disastrous utilizations in military. It is futile to hope that mankind would not recognize this potential and restrain itself from its exploitation.

Failure to exploit the potential of an original idea is a recurring phenomenon in our national history. Few failures, however, can have been so costly in human life as that of our military commanders early in 1916 to appreciate that the tank was a war winning weapon. The slaughter of the Somme, Passchendaele and Ypres salient had to be endured before accepted ‘conventional’ methods were abandoned and the tank given a chance.

Freddie Scappaticci was born in 1946 and raised in a deeply nationalist area of Belfast. When the Troubles broke out in 1969, he joined the Provisional IRA, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming commander of Belfast in 1984. From the outside, Scappaticci appeared to be a dedicated volunteer, but inwardly, he had become disenchanted with the IRA and, in 1977, he started working for British intelligence. At the same time, he took up a leading role in a newly formed IRA Internal Security Unit (ISU), aka ‘The Nutting Squad’. He personally executed two suspected informers and condemned at least thirty-seven more to death. Was he the serial killer that history portrays him? Undoubtedly.

In June 1942, Japanese troops occupied the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska in Alaska, the first enemy occupation of US territory since the War of 1812. For the next year a bloody conflict raged that was nearly invisible to most North Americans as Canadian and American soldiers, airmen and sailors went north to hold the Japanese in check. This is the complete story of the war in the North Pacific, including details of: Japanese subs lurking off the west coast, sinking ships and shelling the coast of British Columbia; the submarine-launched airplane that bombed Oregon’s forests; the surreal tale of balloon-bombs crossing the Pacific to North America.

Free Download Phil Tomaselli, "Tracing Your Second World War Ancestors: A Guide for Family Historians"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1848842880 | EPUB | pages: 176 | 1.2 mb
The Second World War was the defining conflict of the twentieth century and it is one of the most popular and fascinating areas for historical research – and for family historians. More records than ever are available to researchers whose relatives served during the war. And this new book by Phil Tomaselli is the perfect guide to how to locate and understand these sources – and get the most out of them. He explains how, and from where, service records can be obtained, using real examples showing what they look like and how to interpret them. He also examines records of the military units relatives might have served in so their careers can be followed in graphic detail. The three armed services are covered, along with the merchant navy, the Home Guard, civilian services, prisoners of war, gallantry and campaign medals, casualties, women’s services and obscure wartime organizations. Also included are a glossary of service acronyms, information on useful websites, an introduction to the National Archives and details of other useful sources.
