English | 2006 | pages: 196 | ISBN: 0253347521 | PDF | 5,4 mb
This study of Boston’s West Indian immigrants examines the identities, goals, and aspirations of two generations of black migrants from the British-held Caribbean who settled in Boston between 1900 and 1950. Describing their experience among Boston’s American-born blacks and in the context of the city’s immigrant history, the book charts new conceptual territory. The Other Black Bostonians explores the pre-migration background of the immigrants, work and housing, identity, culture and community, activism and social mobility. What emerges is a detailed picture of black immigrant life. Johnson’s work makes a contribution to the study of the black diaspora as it charts the history of this first wave of Caribbean immigrants.

Ottomans Looking West The Origins of the Tulip Age and its Development in Modern Turkey

Free Download Can Erimtan, "Ottomans Looking West?: The Origins of the Tulip Age and its Development in Modern Turkey "
English | 2008 | pages: 278 | ISBN: 1845114914 | PDF | 3,3 mb
The ""Tulip Age"", a concept that described the beginning of the Ottoman Empire’s westward inclination in the eighteenth century, was an idea proposed by Ottoman historian Ahmed Refik in 1912. In the first reassessment of the origins of this concept, Can Erimtan argues the ""Tulip Age"" was an important template for various political and ideological concerns of early twentieth century Turkish governments. The concept is most reflective of the 1930s Republican leadership’s attempt to disengage Turkey’s population from its Islamic culture and past, stressing the virtues of progress, modernity and secularism. It was only the death of Atatürk in 1938 that precipitated a hesitant revival of Islam in Turkey’s public life and a state-sponsored re-invigoration of research into Turkey’s Ottoman past. In this exciting reassessment Erimtan shows us that the trope of the ""Tulip Age"" corresponds more to Turkish society’s desire to re-orientate itself to the Occident throughout the twentieth century rather than to early eighteenth-century Ottoman realities.

Germany and ‘The West’ The History of a Modern Concept

Free Download Riccardo Bavaj, "Germany and ‘The West’: The History of a Modern Concept"
English | ISBN: 1782385975 | 2015 | 328 pages | PDF | 980 KB
"The West" is a central idea in German public discourse, yet historians know surprisingly little about the evolution of the concept. Contrary to common assumptions, this volume argues that the German concept of the West was not born in the twentieth century, but can be traced from a much earlier time. In the nineteenth century, "the West" became associated with notions of progress, liberty, civilization, and modernity. It signified the future through the opposition to antonyms such as "Russia" and "the East," and was deployed as a tool for forging German identities. Examining the shifting meanings, political uses, and transnational circulations of the idea of "the West" sheds new light on German intellectual history from the post-Napoleonic era to the Cold War.

Tango in Japan Cosmopolitanism beyond the West

English | ISBN: 082489569X | 2025 | 248 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Why do Japanese people love tango? Starting with this question, which the author frequently received while working as a tango violinist in Argentina, Tango in Japan reveals histories and ethnographies of tango in Japan dating back to its first introduction in the 1910s to the present day. While initially brought to Yokohama by North American tango dancers in 1914, tango’s immediate popularity in Japan quickly compelled many Japanese performers and writers to travel to Argentina in search of tango’s "origin" beginning in the 1920s. Many Japanese musicians, dancers, aficionados, and the wider public have, since then, approached tango as a new vehicle of expression, entertainment, and academic pursuit. The sounds of tango provided comfort and a sense of hope to many during the most turbulent years of the twentieth century, carving out distinctive characteristics of contemporary Japanese tango culture. Bypassing the West-East axis of understanding cultural transmission,
