At the end of almost every day of their fifty-five years of married life, the publicity-shy author Margaret Forster would ask her naturally gregarious and outgoing husband Hunter Davies to describe to her the highlights of his working day spent in the worlds of journalism and publishing. In the six years that have elapsed since Margaret’s death, Hunter has continued these conversations with his wife, regaling her with accounts of the events and developments in his life – domestic, social, romantic, book-related, health-related and others – through a sequence of ‘Letters to Margaret’.

«He should have listened to his wife!» The Construction of Women’s Roles in German and Yiddish Pre-modern ‘Wigalois’ Ad

Free Download Annegret Oehme, "He should have listened to his wife!: The Construction of Women’s Roles in German and Yiddish Pre-modern ‘Wigalois’ Ad"
English | ISBN: 3110621991 | 2020 | 88 pages | PDF | 605 KB
This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture.

Sex Education for Husband and Wife Women’s Emancipation during the Prophet’s Lifetime

Free Download Abd al-Halim Abu Shuqqah, "Sex Education for Husband and Wife: Women’s Emancipation during the Prophet’s Lifetime"
English | ISBN: 1847742114 | 2024 | 186 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This volume covers an area which most Muslims normally feel shy to talk about. However, the author shows that the Prophet’s guidance provides an open approach to a natural desire that needs to be satisfied so that life goes on easily and smoothly. Islam disapproves of ignoring sexual desires or suppressing them in an attempt to achieve spiritual elevation and excellence. In his approach, based on clear understanding of the Qur’an and the Hadith, the author shows that the lawful satisfaction of the sexual desire earns a believer God’s reward. Moreover, he shows that the Prophet’s conduct provides perfect sex education, in the same way as his conduct in other areas shows us the best approach to take in life.

The Too-Good Wife Alcohol, Codependency, and the Politics of Nurturance in Postwar Japan

Free Download Amy Borovoy, "The Too-Good Wife: Alcohol, Codependency, and the Politics of Nurturance in Postwar Japan"
English | 2005 | ISBN: 0520244524, 0520244516 | PDF | pages: 255 | 1.3 mb
Social drinking is an accepted aspect of working life in Japan, and women are left to manage their drunken husbands when the men return home, restoring them to sobriety for the next day of work. In attempting to cope with their husbands’ alcoholism, the women face a profound cultural dilemma: when does the nurturing behavior expected of a good wife and mother become part of a pattern of behavior that is actually destructive? How does the celebration of nurturance and dependency mask the exploitative aspects not just of family life but also of public life in Japan? The Too-Good Wife follows the experiences of a group of middle-class women in Tokyo who participated in a weekly support meeting for families of substance abusers at a public mental-health clinic. Amy Borovoy deftly analyzes the dilemmas of being female in modern Japan and the grace with which women struggle within a system that supports wives and mothers but thwarts their attempts to find fulfillment outside the family. The central concerns of the book reach beyond the problem of alcoholism to examine the women’s own processes of self-reflection and criticism and the deeper fissures and asymmetries that undergird Japanese productivity and social order.
