US World War II Amphibious Tactics Mediterranean & European Theaters

Free Download Peter Dennis, "US World War II Amphibious Tactics: Mediterranean & European Theaters"
English | 2006 | pages: 68 | ISBN: 1841769541 | PDF | 58,2 mb
Osprey’s examination of the United States’ amphibious tactics during World War II (1939-1945). The US armed forces were responsible for many tactical innovations during the years 1941-5, but in no field was US mastery more complete than amphibious warfare. The US armed forces pioneered amphibious warfare in the Pacific and later in the Mediterranean but it was against Fortress Europe that the most famous and the most successful amphibious assault took place. On D-Day the Allies invaded German-held Normandy in a pre-dawn amphibious assault by American, British and Canadian forces. The US had perfected the special equipment and tactics for this extraordinarily difficult and risky form of warfare and despite large casualties during the beach assaults they were ultimately successful. This book explains, in accessible terms, the many problems associated with amphibious warfare and how they were overcome in the Mediterranean and European Theaters, and is illustrated with photographs, maps, diagrams and colour plates that support the explanations and bring the whole complex process to life.

US Commanders of World War II (1) Army and USAF

Free Download James Arnold, Robert Hargis, Darko Pavlovic, "US Commanders of World War II (1) Army and USAF"
English | 2002 | pages: 66 | ISBN: 1841764744 | PDF | 3,1 mb
To be a successful commander requires experience, character, tenacity and boldness: the ability to establish a good rapport with both your staff and your men is also vital. The real test comes in combat though, where a large proportion of luck is involved – the luck to be in the right place at the right time – and lasting reputations can be formed in a very brief and frenetic period. The key US commanders of World War II were subject to (and often gratuitously fostered) the projection of their ‘characters’, exploiting the growing power of the media. This title examines the careers, personalities and fortunes of the key US Army and Air Force commanders of World War II (1939-1945).

US Amphibious Tanks of World War II

Free Download Steven J. Zaloga, Henry Morshead, "US Amphibious Tanks of World War II"
English | 2012 | pages: 50 | ISBN: 1849086362 | PDF | 3,4 mb
The advent of combined arms operations in World War II created the need for specialized armored vehicles. In the case of amphibious attacks, the issue arose of how best to land tanks on a beach. Although a variety of specialized landing craft were developed, the Dieppe raid in 1942 encouraged the development of tanks that could be deployed from further off-shore to limit the vulnerability of the LCT craft. The deep-wading equipment that they developed was first used during Operation Husky on Sicily in July 1943, and subsequently for Operations Avalanche (Salerno, September 1943), Shingle (Anzio, January 1944) and Overlord (Normandy, June 1944). The US-manufactured DD tanks were used during Overlord by both US and British forces, and again in 1945 during the Rhine crossings. Initially, developments in the Pacific Theater were separate from those in Europe. The Marines learned from the Tarawa landings in 1943 that unprepared tanks could not be safely landed even in shallow water. DD tanks were never seriously considered for the Pacific, so other solutions were sought. A detailed study of specialized US amphibious tanks, this is a title that will appeal to those interested in both Pacific and European Theaters, modellers and collectors.

Transcendence and the Secular World Life in Orientation to Ultimate Presence

Free Download Ingolf U Dalferth, Jo Bennett, "Transcendence and the Secular World: Life in Orientation to Ultimate Presence"
English | 2018 | pages: 303 | ISBN: 3161563298 | PDF | 2,9 mb
On theological grounds, Ingolf U. Dalferth argues the case for taking a critical stance towards the current leave-taking of secularization and the fashionable proclamation of a new post-secular religious epoch. Right from the start, the Christian faith has made a decisive contribution to the secularization of the world, the criticism of religion, religions and religiosity. Christian faith is concerned with God’s presence in all areas of life, often beyond the usual religious forms and in distinction towards them. The orientation towards this ultimate presence and therefore towards antecedent transcendence in the immanence of a secular world leaves the alternative between religious and non-religious life behind. In this work, the author examines the new distinctions which this Christian life orientation demands.

This book combines Men-at-Arms 342: ‘The US Army in World War II (I) The Pacific’, Men-at-Arms 347: ‘The US Army in World War II (2) The Mediterranean’ and Men-at-Arms 350: ‘The US Army in World War II (3) North-West Europe’. When World War II broke out in September 1939 the US Army – starved of resources since 1919 – numbered just 174,000 men. By VJ-Day, 2 September 1945, a total of 8.3 million had served in an army which had risen to a stable strength of 91 divisions. This title explores the campaigns fought by the US Army in the Pacific, the Mediterranean and North West Europe. It covers the variety of uniforms worn, the equipment and weapons used and the organisation of the different units. Particularly interesting units such as mountain, Japanese-American and African-American troops, are also studied.
