English | ISBN: 0231210612 | 2024 | 344 pages | PDF | 45 MB
At the pilgrimage site of Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka, a footprint is embedded atop the mountain summit. Buddhists hold that it was left by the Buddha, Hindus say Lord Siva, and Muslims and Christians identify it with Adam, the first man. The Sri Lankan state, for its part, often uses the Peak as a prop to convey a harmonious image of religious pluralism, despite increasing Buddhist hegemony. How should the diversity of this place be understood historically and managed practically?

The Ambitions of Curiosity Understanding the World in Ancient Greece and China

Free Download G. E. R. Lloyd, "The Ambitions of Curiosity: Understanding the World in Ancient Greece and China "
English | ISBN: 0521894611 | 2002 | 200 pages | PDF | 10 MB
In The Ambitions of Curiosity, G.E.R. Lloyd explores the origins and growth of systematic inquiry in Greece, China, and Mesopotamia. It asks such questions as what factors stimulated or inhibited this development? Whose interests were served? Who set the agenda? What was the role of the state in sponsoring, supporting or blocking research, in such areas as historiography, natural philosophy, medical research, astronomy, technology in all those fields. How were each of those fields defined and developed in different ancient societies? How did truly innovative thinkers persuade their own contemporaries to accept their work? Three of the main themes elaborated are, first, the different routes those developments took in China, Greece and Mesopotamia; second, the unexpected results of many research efforts; and third, the tensions between state control and individual innovation and the different ways they were resolved-problems that remain in scientific research today. G.E.R. Lloyd is Chair of the East Asian History of Science Trust and Emeritus Professor of Ancient Philosophy and Science at the University of Cambridge. He has authored and edited numerous books including Greek Thought (Harvard, 2000) and Hippocratic Writings (Viking, 1984). He is a Fellow of the British Academy and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Art and Sciences.

Desert Biomes (Greenwood Guides to Biomes of the World)

Free Download Joyce A. Quinn, "Desert Biomes (Greenwood Guides to Biomes of the World)"
English | 2008 | pages: 248 | ISBN: 0313340161 | PDF | 4,9 mb
This volume in the Greenwood Guides to Biomes of the World focuses on deserts, the seemingly desolate―but actually quite lively―regions that are home to some of the most interesting and beautiful flora and fauna in the world. Desert Biomes examines three different types of biomes: warm/hot deserts (such as the Mojave and Sahara deserts), cold deserts (such as Patagonia in South America), and the West Coast Fog Desert biomes, which occur on certain regions of the western edge of major continents. The volumes examines how these biomes are unique in terms of their vegetation, geographical distribution, soil, challenges posed by the environment, adaptation of the plants and animals to the environment, and conservation efforts. Maps, photos, diagrams, drawings, and tables accompany the text, as do sidebars that highlight habitats, species, and ecological relationships. The volume includes a bibliography of accessible resources for further research.

China’s Harmony Renaissance What the World must know

Free Download Francis C. W Fung, "China’s Harmony Renaissance: What the World must know"
English | 2006 | ISBN: 1424327407 | PDF | pages: 146 | 2.0 mb
FOREWORD Unilateralism and cultural conflicts in the beginning of the 21st Century seem to be unstoppable in view of extremism between conflicting parties and the overwhelming U.S. media dominance around the globe. Even though the Western media may have all the good intentions of spreading democracy worldwide, to those who yearn for diversity of culture and international opinion in the United States, the American domination of world media and world government policies have been stifling indeed. The recent rediscovery of ancient Chinese philosophies of balance and harmony in China cannot be timelier. The U.S. is badly in need of a dose of the gentle, tolerant and accepting Eastern philosophy that is the essence of Chinese wisdom. This can be particularly inviting for those who are truly interested in Chinese language, culture and world harmony. This primer on ancient Chinese harmony teaching can hopefully bring a glimmer of light to those hopeful that The World of Harmony Will Surely Come . China during the last one hundred and fifty years, ever since the Opium War, has been searching for its identity. The present Peoples Republic of China, rising from the plunder of Western and Japanese Imperialism, is only fifty seven years old. It is relatively young and short in terms of China s glorious five thousand years of ancient history. For 2500 years China has benefited from the long tradition handed down from Laotze and Confucius which emphasized its rich cultural value in harmony teachings. It is this harmony culture that enabled China to survive changes in power, foreign invasions, internal strife, other struggles throughout its long history. Today, China has rediscovered its ancient heritage in the teachings of harmony, and, in doing so, China rediscovered itself. This is not unlike Europe s rediscovery of ancient Greek democracy during the European Renaissance period after the Dark Ages that led to the Enlightenment and the sp

What if some of the most iconic lives in human history were, for centuries, forgotten? From the earliest human civilizations through to the present day, the stories of countless influential women – leaders, artists, warriors, scientists and more – have been ignored, forgotten, or actively suppressed. You’ve probably not encountered the likes of Fatima al-Fihri (an Islamic World visionary who founded the world’s first university), Ching Shih (the most successful pirate in history), or Huda Sha’arawi (a pioneering Egyptian feminist leader, suffragette, nationalist, and founder of the Egyptian Feminist Union), but that’s about to change.
